Windows Updates installing without permission

Hello John, I followed all this I am learning.

But, if you go to the tutorial ( Option one ) To enable or disable the Windows 10 upgrade in the reg file, (post 12 in this thread ) there is no mention of Current Version in between windows\..........\windowsUpdate, so I was right and not stupid

windowsUpdate, so I was right and not stupid
Yes I know Thelma I was not insinuating you had missed something it is really just a blanket cover for any 10 upgrade - well in my tiny mind it is.

The whole 10 issue is also in my mind one of the worst things to come out of Microsoft and frankly I am sick of the constant jamming it down everyone throats with not much recourse to be able to make up ones own mind (however small mine might be).
I don't go to a dual car dealership and ask for a Ford and then they start shoving Toyota at you because they can make more money on the Toyota. It is down to greed whether anyone likes it or not.

My best guess is because Home version first of all costs less and can not be configured for true domain networking and routing. Home does not use a Work Group set up it still uses only Home Group. Business networks can be managed, monitored and updated from a common domain server, that is a little much for a few machines in a home. Domains will have common printer servers, which allows for businesses to monitor traffic, capture data and usage in great detail and assign access to specific printers to specific users. A lot of this comes down to cost management and helping to keep employees using only the equipment which they should be using. The director of IT would get an ear full from a CEO if everyone was wearing out the CEO's nice color printer for holiday cards and pictures of kids and kitties. Imagine a 30 story office building with 10 printers and 100 computers on each floor. Somebody has to direct the traffic. That function is not needed in a home environment.

On a different note, I can not get over the increase in traffic on this site in the last 2 weeks for exactly the reason of M$ updates have caused hundreds if not thousands who use groups like this because M$ will net be honest about what happened to their computer to cause it to not work now. I spent 30 years working in business environments all around Washington DC and if we conducted business in this fashion we would be on a very fast train heading out of town.

Keep doing what you are doing, you vigilance and patience is a valuable trait to have through this crap. Pity the fools who are not capable of doing what you are and have not got anybody doing what you are doing they can't even use their computers.

i understand he means untick that. what i don't understand is why (if you select say... "check but let me decide what to install") or what happens to the recommended updates. do they just appear in the optional page instead?

Yes, that's the point of doing that. To get them out of the important section.

Evidently Windows Update is now in charge

Working on my laptop this evening, when I get the notification that there are updates waiting to be installed. I figure I can let them install while I keep working. So I take a look, select the ones I want, and while they are installing, go back to work.
Suddenly, the screen goes black. After about 30 seconds, I get my screen back, but with the lowest possible resolution. Then, about 20 seconds later, it goes black again. It returns briefly with correct resolution. Then goes black again, and it took more than two minutes to regain any control of my computer.
I managed to get the Windows Update screen just in time to see it tell me that some updates did not install, and that it needs to reboot to finish installing. Before I can even think about telling it what to do, it takes it upon itself to reboot. Obviously, I lost what I was working on. Who the *&#@! creates updates that take control of the computer as if the OS were suddenly in charge of things like when to reboot? And what is the logic in creating updates that are going to disrupt use, change screen resolution, change it back, without giving advance notice to the user? Someone at Microsoft needs a swift kick in the rear and a knock up side the head.

BroWCarey,
It sounds like you have Windows Update set to install things like video drivers.

You might want to remove the check from "Give me recommended updates the same way...."

If you already had that option unchecked, then I don't know what installed that messed with your display.

Hmm User just where is that setting for video drivers etc because I have been getting soem really weird stuff just lately - the latest being the System Update Readiness Tool which I would have thought would have ben already on this machine at least (yearold).

I have checked to install because of paranoia re those 10 updates rubbish and I don't fancy yet another clean install to get rid of that rubbish all over again.

I think as Brow said Microsoft require a short sharp kick because all the upgrade stuff has made my life a least that much more miserable wondering what I am updating - checking each that is offered is very tedious and time wasting.
