Windows Updates installing without permission

My W7 Ultimate PC is primed not to allow windows updates to install automatically.

I noticed tonight while shutting down the machine that 34 updates were being installed. After rebooting, I checked my update settings and they were still at 'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them'.

Anyone else have this issue or know why it happened?

Hmm perhaps I am paranoid Gummo but ever since 10 arrived on the scene updates have become a bit of a point of intense aggravation for me as the same thing happens on my machines.

I find running these fixes the problem for a while

but you still need to be vigilant especially that KB3035533 I have re installed four of my six machines and thoroughly checked through the updates to Hide that wretched thing. Mind you I think that some updates are getting through somehow, so I also keep checking from time to time the status of the updates settings.

Hi,
Typically if someone didn't want to install updates automatically they would have the settings set to not download automatically :/

I'd say review the options again and make a more appropriate selection from the drop down list

I had my WU settings to download but not install. I suffered the same result as the OP. 14 updates installed yesterday evening without user intervention. I am switching to "do not download" going forward to see if that works any better.

Hmm try this setting (in pic) I use it all the time but beware it pays to check every now and then because mine reverts to auto for some reason from time to time. This way you can check out the updates including that wretched 10 one KB3035533 if you haven't got it already.
I have reinstalled four of my machines just to make sure I get this one hidden

Sorry late reply but I thought maybe if there were some corruption in the system files the updates settings might be out of whack .

But I have tried now several times to do this change in the register, well "very odd"

I do HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\............but there is no Windows Update anywhere there !

Waited a day and tried again, same result ......

This is exactly how KB3097877 kept trying to reinstall itself on not just one, but five machines; two laptops and three desktops running 64-bit W7 Pro or Ultimate. It persisted in spite of uninstalling the KB and ensuring the Windows Update was set to let me choose which updates to install and when, similar to your settings. The installation would occur only during a Shutdown to power the computer off completely, and not during a Restart. It persisted in attempting to install the KB until I finally hid the KB3097877 update in Windows Update.

I'm equally mystified why updates would be auto-installing in spite of system settings specifically set not to allow it.

Yep I would also Uncheck the boxes Allow All users to install & Give me Recommended the same way

Thelma did you go to LOCAL MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows (very first entry) > (open up) > Current version >scroll down to Windows Updates (open it) and that gives you the status of the reg entries see pic

The link for the tutorial for disabling the 10 upgrade is Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums there is just a simple download of the reg entry that Shawn has provided - if you don't want 10 but have unfortunately installed that wretched KB3035533 in your updates you can check the history but it is tedious. If you haven't and still do not wnat 10 hen just hide the that aprticular update.

I missed out the CurrentVersion in the line up

And I checked it 3 times ! Never mind, problem solved.

No, I don't have any problems with these Windows 10 upgrade updates, I just wanted to make sure, that's all

Still am gonna cheque this tutorial to see if I was really that stupid to miss that, and I will always first do a backup.

Ok well all's good then and yes the tutorial just has one of those little Download scrolls that Shawn puts in it will tell you it could possibly damage the reg but just follow the prompts.

jalind, give this a look over. I created this after being involved in a couple of threads surrounding the nonsense created after M$ released KB3035583 several times and it kept shoving settings aside and reloading the Win 10 notices. I applied these settings to my own computer over a couple of days of back and forth with other participants in the thread and I have been trouble free. gopher22 was on a separate thread and contacted me last week inquiring about this. I put this into a document that average users could understand and passed it to him today. He contacted me about an hour and half later and said it was pretty easy to follow. Here it is, it only works for Win 7 Pro and above. Home version does not have the reg key to entirely stop M$ pushing through the settings. Good luck and I would appreciate knowing what your thoughts are regarding the ease of following to guide.

cyclops mate I know I can access the group policy in Pro and Ultimate but not Hoome version (the reasonung is beyond me) which is why just set updates as I do and then use Shawns upgrade stop.

You are right on wiht problems with the 10 stuff being jammed down our throats and some and you have probably noticed to number of threads posted wit "I upgraded to 10 didn't like it so reverted and now have real issues" I find those a tad hard to deal with apart form suggesting a clean install after thorough clean all.

ICIT2LOL, I am feeling sorry for so many people. It's a damned curse. I won't even shut the power of I put it to sleep and that's as far as I go. I freak out when the lights flicker in my house or the power goes out completely. The f'ing M$ might sneak something in then. My mother bought a new laptop w/10 on it and like most old ladies when they get something new to replace the one that is only 3 years they're happy as kids in a candy shop.

I am now thinking about your circumstance w/ the 2 machines on Home Prem. Istart to wonder if you buy product keys for Pro or Ultimate will the machine and M$ like the taste of it or spit it out? I have a source for things, wink. I have been told by my source, that the iso that I have is generic Win7 and it accepts a key and the key is what determines the version. Do you know about that?

All retail ISO have been like that since Windows 7 release. It's no secret, it's been known for years and is the basis for many installation tutorials here.

Group policy is not available in Home Premium.
