Windows Updates Stuck in Windows 7

Okay, I attempted the upgrade from the RTM Disk (X15-65804), but I receive the following message before the upgrade could begin:

Compatibility Report (saved to desktop)

"The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the computer to continue. Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing."

Seems that my "stuck update" (whatever it is) is preventing me from moving forward with the repair. I wonder if there is any way to get the update "unstuck." Maybe a way to check on updates that might be in progress and cancel them?

Ah - that may give us a clue...

Please open an elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command,

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier
clip_image001.gif

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

It seems that there's a registry Key that's flagging a partially-installed update.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command.

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG DELETE HKLM\COMPONENTS /v ExecutionState

Confirm the request, then close the window and reboot.
Just for grins, try Windows Update now.

Okay, thank you very much for your inspiration. (It claimed it had to install Windows Update first, which is new). I have this error when I run Windows Update.

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 80071A91 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

NOTE - I am going to try the instructions shown here:

Thank you. I attempted the steps outlined in my prior post. However, I was unable to load any updates through Windows Update afterwards. My error message is the same:

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 80071A91 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Okay, I attempted the RTM disk you mentioned earlier and it is running. So wish me luck - and I'll keep you up to date.

Many thanks!

Yes! The problem is solved. The registry Key adjustment that you offered plus the use of the RTM disk in combination have solved the problem. I was prompted for my Product Key following the repair and everything looks great.

Thank you, White Knight. I have loaded SP1 successfully and will continue on from here.

Many thanks. You are a true Internet Hero.
