I am installing windows updates (167 of them) on a brand new system. I am getting numerous icons on my desk top starting with the letter m or p. What are these?

...signs of a problem! :(
Have you changed defaults of any kind, yet? Specifically the location of the User accounts?
It sounds to me as if the system doesn't have access to the area where it would normally put temporary files, so it's flinging them wherever it can.

this should give us some data to work with...
Please follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html - but just upload the file to a reply here.
Also, run the following commands in an elevated Command Prompt, and post the results.

DIR %userprofile%\desktop
DIR %userprofile%\desktop /ah

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
