I have never liked windows updates so I have had my different computers set up so I can update them as I want. My internet computer (vista) has had issues for some time never updating, so I did a fresh install. I got updates until I installed SP2. Seems that was the end of Vista updates.

My video computer/HTPC (W7) I rarely have it connected but today I tried to update it and to start I had 138 updates and it started to download them but never made any progress never getting beyond 0% downloaded. So I searched for downloads and now it does exactly what my Vista computer did never finding any updates.

So is this a Windows server issue like they are no longer updating W7 either.

Hi:

The process is similar for Vista (although the necessary patches to fix the WU client are somewhat different). Let us know if you need help with that...

Did you solve the issue for your Win7 computer?

If not, try this:

NOTE: On a fresh Windows 7 install, it may help to first install IE11 and MS .NET Framework 4.6.1.

NOTE:
If this is NOT a fresh install of Win7, you should already have both IE11 and .NET 4.6.1 AND you can probably skip KB3125574. You may already have KB3020369, as well. KB3172605 seems to be the "key" to getting this fixed...

  1. IF NOT ALREADY DONE: Download and save, but do not run yet, the standalone installers for KB3125574, KB3020369 and KB3172605 for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).
  2. Disconnect from the internet.
  3. Disable the Windows Update service in both the applet itself ("never check for updates") AND from services.msc (RIGHT-click on it, select "Properties" and then change it to "manual" and STOP the service, then click "OK").
  4. REBOOT
  5. Run 3125574 and reboot
  6. Run 3020369 and reboot.
  7. Run 3172605 and reboot.
  8. Go into services.msc and change WU back to "Automatic-delayed start" and start the service.
  9. Reconnect to internet.
  10. Change WU to "notify me, but let me choose".
  11. Run a manual check for updates.
It should work for you now.
If it does not, or if you get specific error codes, then you may have a different problem.

Thanks,
MM

Hi:

Yes, the fix presumes one already has SP1.
Other sources suggest having IE11 and .NET Framework 4.6.1 installed may help, although I do not know if that is "necessary".
I have also seen reports that using the same process, but installing instead the Oct 2016 (KB3185330) and/or Nov 2016 (KB3197868) "Rollup", also fixes the issue. That stands to reason, as those "Rollups" should contain the relevant bits of the other 3, older patches. But I do not have a VM or test box on which to research this.
All I know is that the above procedure worked for me on two Win7 boxes, and for many other folks.

Did you try it?

Thanks,
MM
