Hi, mohammed yasser.

Well, considering you've only got 2 gigabytes of RAM, I'd recommend going for Windows 7 32-bit. Of course, I'd recommend 64-bit, but there's no point unless you decide to upgrade your RAM in the near future.

I'd stay away from Vista with 2 gigabytes of RAM as well. Some say you need a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM just to run Vista without complications - but that's just nonsense. Vista will be fine, but my recommendation is Windows 7. Have fun!

Thanks,

I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Bit with a Pentium 2200 2.2Ghz dual core and it does the job, can be a bit laggy so will be buying new MOBO and CPU in the near future to resolve the issues.

Windows 7 will be my first choice. Preferably x64. That way, when you are ready to go to 4GB of memory (or more), you won't have to change your OS also.

Windows 7 would be much more responsive with the spec's you listed.

Unless you have a hardware or software issue that requires X86 I would tend to agree that you could/should run X64 and then you would be pre-positioned to add more than 4GB of ram which, based on your spec's, your motherboard will support. Currently there aren't too many advantages to X64...but.....Going forward there WILL be more and more and there aren't any real disadvantages unless there is a software/hardware incompatibility.

Furthermore you would then be ahead of the pack in future upgrades. OS's will continue to go X64 and more companies are supporting X64 for their hardware/software. If you already run X64 you will by default be positioned for all new compatible hardware/software for the foreseeable future and will not be trapped by a need to upgrade something to run Win8 or Win9 when/if they go X64 only.

Windows 7 is comparable to Windows XP in speed. Vista is light years behind of Windows 7 in terms of speed. That is what I have written many articles about too in some other sites. Windows 7 is one of the first Windows OS that works faster than the previous version (Vista) with same amount of memory. Microsoft seems to have stopped the trend of newer versions of Windows needing more hardware requirements.

In some cases, I would say Windows 7 is faster than even XP especially in startup and shutdown etc. from my personal experience. But go for 32 bit as mentioned earlier.

Also keep the UAC activated and go for MSE as the security suite as that is very light and would perfectly fine for your 2 GB RAM. And its free too. :p Dont keep too many programs open at the same time and your 2GB RAM would work like a charm in Windows 7. ;)

Unless you're going to be using your computer for banking or anything else that is mildly dangerous, I'd argue you don't need any anti-virus so long as you regularly install all available Windows updates.

WHAT? Bearing in mind the OP's obvious lack of knowledge. and your recommending no antivirus? AV's arent there to stop you getting viruses, safe computing does that, they are there as a "just in case measure," do you really think the OP would know how to effectively clean an infected machine?

I would argue that you sir are a fool.

I personally use Avast 5.0.594. I haven't had any problems since I started running Avast which I started using when I built a Windows Home Server a few years ago and Avast was the only vendor offering an AV solution for it at that time.

Definitely do NOT recommend that you not run AV despite statements by "hungrytoheal" to the contrary. Its a crap shoot if you do and why take the chance when there are good AV solutions for free.

Hi, mohammed yasser.

I'd recommend ESET NOD32, as it's a fairly lightweight application. It has some of the most advanced definitions and it should run nicely on your system. Here's a list I compiled earlier.

Free Antivirus Applications

  • ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 - Please use this download link and this download link only. I ask you to do this to avoid downloading incorrect and potentially harmful software. Please select the Antivirus download, not the Smart Security download, as we only want an antivirus. Select the appropriate version (32-bit or 64-bit) depending on your operating system.
  • Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus - Please use this download link and this download link only. I ask you to do this to avoid downloading incorrect and potentially harmful software.
  • Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.396 Final - Please use this download link and this download link only. I ask you to do this to avoid downloading incorrect and potentially harmful software.
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 - Trial Version - Please use this download link and this download link only. I ask you to do this to avoid downloading incorrect and potentially harmful software. To download this software, you'll need to go through an e-mail verification process. Please fill in your Name and E-mail Address to do this at the link provided above.
Thanks,
Harvey Meale

Right now the most lightweight effective free AV is MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Win7 firewall.

But Avast 5 is a close second, if they didn't bug you about registering and announce every time they update.

MSE installs in 30 seconds, updates, runs a quick scan and then becomes invisible forever unless there's a threat.

Hear, hear Gregrocker,
M$ have hit the jackpot with this one, you don't need to clutter up your system with anti-spyware or ad blockers, MSE DOES IT ALL.

Put your wallets away, its as good as any paid for bloated applications

In my personal opinion I would go with Windows 7 to be quite honest. I have tried Vista and I just absolutely disliked it. Considering the fact when I got Vista, Microsoft announced Windows 7 to be released soon. I was pretty cheesed off about that one. Plus the gaming department for Vista was a horrid department for me. Nothing ever worked really. I like the visuals of Windows 7 better as well, I mean Vista was alright but 7 just made Vista better. And I am not sure if Windows 7 has the same issue with RAM as Vista did, I just know trying to run Vista on 1 gig of RAM did not cut it at all. Most terrible experience was that.
