Windows will not start, OS is not able to load drivers.

Hello, I have been trying to use the installer dvd to try and repair windows. At the screen where I can select to load drivers, I don't see an option from the place that says "Select an operating system that you want to repair". I hit next, and I go the startup repair from recovery tools. Every time I run the tool, I get a message that says that the tool may have completed successfully, reboot to find out.

When I go to details of the repair I see a message that says Windows\system32\drivers\pciide.sys is corrupt, and another message about pciidex.sys.

Try running an sfc/scannow command at boot.

Thanks for the response, I tried running that command and when I ran it I got an error message that said:

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again."

I tried rebooting several times and still got the same error message.

I've tried running a startup repair about 7 times or so, I'm still seeing the issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that you must be able to boot into windows to attempt the installation repair.

Ah, so you can't even get that far. Have you considered clean installing?

If I do a clean install will my files still remain?

No, unfortunately they won't. You also may not be able backup due to your inability to access the Windows desktop.

We might be able to work around that though; do you have another computer?

I have a linux installation on the same machine where I have my important files backed up...I'd like to avoid the hassle of going through the installation of all my programs again.

Boot into http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html and choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This should start Windows with the last known registry and driver options that worked.

Are you able to get far enough to do that?

You might also want to run a chkdsk on the system partition to check for bad sectors or system errors. If you use Option 2 and the command prompt at startup you should be able to run it.
