You're talking about the standard Media Center remote? Oh yeah, no trouble at all. I've got an old XP MCE remote, a newer VMC remote, a Logitech Harmony remote as well as a Media Center Keyboard uses the same infrared receiver as the remotes and they all work just fine without any setup required. Actually the keyboard even works before Win 7 is fully installed, as in, I was able to enter in information during the install process with it.

Go to Tasks/Settings, TV, TV Signal, Set Up TV Signal. Then select your region, input your zipcode, Windows will download guide info, then windows will examine your singnal and find your tunners.

Keep in mind that once you select your tunners for QAM and scan again, it will reset your guide (at least mine did, but I was also changing guide options. If you select Digital for guide for your analog tunner, I find you get a lot more channels listed, even though you cant watch them, but you can see the program listings and then use these to map your QAM channels to. You can select the option of scanning for missing channels, and this will not reset guide, but also will not designate a new card for QAM (or at least in my case)
I have a HVR-1250 that works fine, my 1600 shows up a only an analog tunner when I select for Windows to identify my singnals. It reports "the following tunner will not be configured" and when I click on the box it reports something like BDA-418 which I googled and it is the HVR1600. I checked my model and it is product code 74041. I have done the regfile, the HCWClear, the install of the cd_4.6a+ drivers from the hauppage site, tried with the newer windows 7 drivers, restart, no luck. I did notice that the reg file put info in for tunners I dont have (which I understand is not a problem) but in uppercase, and the entry for the HVR1600 is in lowercase, although I did check and it had the powertoy entry? Could case matter?
I also have checked both coaxial cables and both can feed the HVR-1250 succesfully. All my cables are high quality home made off of a Monster 8way splitter with motorolla power module.
Argg, it sucks to only have one QAM tunner! I am almost ready to buy a 2250, does anyone know if this works out of the box with W7 rc?
I'll have to say I was really impressed that I was able to assign the digital QAM channels to channels in my guide and merge them. After I switched from MythDora5 for my HTPC, I thought I would never see QAM again.

Update on Vista and Win 7 RC

Schmunk - I own a HVR1600 and have an identical experience as yours with this card under Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I did all the regfile modifications with AllowQAM and it only shows 1 analog tuner for the scan, no QAM. I checked that my card is ver. 74041 so it should work and should detect a QAM tuner. Also when I scanned the analog tuner, I found (besides the usual 70 or so analog channels) a bunch of channels from 1001 and up. However, the above 1001 channels only displayed blank black screens but the channel labels are there and can be clicked to enter.

By the way, I recently downloaded Win 7 RC, 64-bit and went through the identical procedures and, lo and behold, Win 7 WMC did detect 2 tuners for the same HVR1600 card, one analog and one digital. The can tuned to all the analog channels under Comcast and a few of the QAM (HD) channels, but only about 6 of them. I womder if I can manually tune to the other QAM cheannels which did not show up during the auto scan.

I understand some postings did have more success than I in detecting an analog and digital tuner within Vista but I certainly was not successful.
Anyone else who can provide more infomation and suggestions is appreciated.

You do know that your scan will not "show" the digital channels in the guide right? The only ones that will show up are the Free HD because they send the channel data with the signal, so it identifies the channel. All of the QAM channels are there, but you have to go into edit channels, and check them to make them visible. In Oregon on Comcast these are like C76.1, C76.4, C76.8, C101.2 etc. I had about 40 to check, then they show up in the guide. Then watch one, and find out maybe it is history channel, so you select guide, then info and edit channel, then edit listing, then you can sort by name or number, find the channel that matches, and update. You can also pic your analog History channel for example, and select to merge the info, so you will just have one channel 50 for me, and if I select to record, in the record priorities you can specify tunner pref. I have a 5.1 reciever hooked up via SPDIF, and so when the QAM channel is on, I see the stereo switch to Digital 5.1. When it is the analog tunner it displays PCM 5 channel stereo (an artifical mix on my Onkyo reciever)

I downloaded the TV pack but never got around to it on vista 32. When I found out 7rc had QAM, I jumped. One drawback is my netflix play now is not supported now. I only have 2gb of ram in my htpc, so I didn't see any reason to struggle with x64. Do you know of any? Still have to load my Blue Ray software, I highly recommend Blue Ray, I was skeptical but the picture is just awesome, it was a wow moment for sure.
WHen I get home I will post a link to a tutorial for setting up QAM in 7, it is easy.

I guess I don’t understand how you can get digital (HD) channels since all the HVR1600 can detect and pick up via Vista is from the analog tuner. I also have a Comcast feed here in San Francisco and the extra unknown analog (?) channels I seem to pick up are 1001, 1003… etc, not anything like your C76.1, C76.4, C76.8, C101.2 etc. Could my 1001 and above channels be equivalent to your C78.1 channels. However, on Win7 the few digital channels I can pick up are labeled 5.1, 5.2, 7.1… etc and those are HD channels.

I, like you, just built a HTPC from scratch equipped with an AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz processor, 6 Gigs of RAM, 1 terabyte HD and an LG BlueRay drive. My 6 gig RAM does show up on 64-bit versions of Vista or Win 7. I use the HDMI output to my 47” 1080p LCD screen and SPDIF into my Nakamichi HT receiver for 5.1 sound. I am still learning the ropes of the HTPC but have been delighted with its capabilities so far. Any help in setting up QAM in Win 7 and Vista will be most helpful for me as well as many others.

I guess I don’t understand how you can get digital (HD) channels since all the HVR1600 can detect and pick up via Vista is from the analog tuner.

I am using 7 rc 32bit. I could not tune QAM with Vista, though you can if you instal the Figi power pack, and a couple other updates, but I did not try it because 7 came out.
My digital channels are the same as yours, but in the guide they show up with the added C before the number. The HD channels showed up in the guide by themselves because windows can read the EPG info that the signals include. Too bad QAM doesnt have that. A digital cable box from your provider can map them, but it is still a manual process for the HTPC enthusiast.
By the way, I edited my post above with more info on how to add the QAM channesl and also posted a link to a guide that I read before I did it.

I still can not get QAM with my 1600 When I let windows examine my signal, it says one tunner will not be configured and lists WinTV BDA 418, which is the Digital Tunner on the HVR-1600. Are people adding in manually?

After you set up your tunner as digital and Scan for channels:

Go to Tasks heading and select Settings, then TV, then Guide, then Edit Channels. Here is where I had all of my QAM channels from my scan. You have to check the box next to each channel for it to show in the guide. Then when you are watching a channel like 74.6 find out what it is, then select Guide on your remote, then info/more button, then you can go to Edit Channel, then Edit Listing. This is where you can assign it a listing, or merge it with an anolog channel listing.

I have a qam capable wintv 1600 (with 74041 tuner). Win7 recognize it and install driver without problem. SD cable TV is very good in media center. However I couldn't get any qam channels. My cable tv is comcast classic. Anyone has better luck?

Just add the above, works write out of the box with the new drivers.

Hello,

I am also using a HVR 1600 and am unable to pick up any ClearQAM channels. I know that they are available as my TV with a built in QAM is able to pick them up without a Set Top Box.

I've done all the steps mentioned here. Including the registry fixes to no avail. I'm unable to pick up any QAM channels using WinTV (Although I can get local ATSC), in WMC I'm told that my Tuner is a "Digital Antenna (ATSC)" as opposed to a digital QAM.

Any help?

I installed my HVR 1600 in the basement and all Comcast clear QAM channels were learned. I moved my pc closer to where my cable enters the house and I could not tune in the QAM channels. If I pulled the cable off and reconnected QAM channel would come in, but as soon as I switched to another and then back I could not receive the channel. Move back to basement and tuning was perfect. There is about 80 feet of extra cable to reach the jack in the basement. The 1600 does not seem to like a hot signal! Hope this helps someone.

Syngularity, I had the same issue as you with the same card. I tried everything and finally gave up. Contacted hauppage for RMA #, new card came in and worked perfectly.

The registry shown on this thread is for older cards only ( forgot which models, U can google it ) and is not needed for the newer 1600 models ( mine was one of the newer ones ).

Tester
