wired network adapter not working

Hi, I've been having problems with my wired network adapter. It no longer seems to be operating but my wireless connection still works fine. I plug in the ethernet cable to my laptop and there are no LEDs lit up on either end of the CAT 5 cable receiving plugs. Normally these light up when the ethernet is active. I believe that I've isolated the problem to my computer rather than the router or ethernet cord because I've attached the ethernet cord to a different (Mac) laptop and had an active connection. I've also tried to bypass the wifi router and connect the ethernet cord directly from the the cable modem to the computer and that didn't make any difference.

So far, I've tried the repair option on the wired network adaptor and it has instructed me to plug in an ethernet cord which is already plugged in, and that didn't make any difference. I've reinstalled the network adapter and that didn't make any difference. I've also reset the tcp/ip stack and no difference.

The details on my setup:
1. wired connection doesn't work. Wireless does

5. Anti Virus: AVG, Firewall: Windows firewall

Download and run Download Complete Internet Repair - MajorGeeks as admin in Safe Mode with Networking.
Select options:
- Reset Internet Protocol
- Repair Winsock
- Renew Internet connections
- Reset Windows Firewall

Run as admin in Safe Mode with Networking and de-select options:
7 / 8 / 9 / 12 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 21 / 23 / 24 / 25 / 28.01 / 29 / 30 / 31 / 33

If this fail too, then download Linux Mint MATE (Download - Linux Mint) and boot with it (no installation needed, it will run from the RAM), see if you can connect with wired.

Ok, I've tried all of the steps suggested and none of them worked. I had hoped that using Linux Mint Mate would have made the difference, but I'm using it now (though the wireless connection) and the wired connection still doesn't work. When I see the available network connection, the ethernet networks are grayed out and listed as disconnected.

However, when I go to the control center > network connections the wired connection 1 is listed there. I'm not so familiar with Linux. Is there anything else that needs to be done to setup the wired connection or should it get set up automatically?

Still, the LEDs on the laptop ethernet plug are not illuminated. However, I did notice that upon startup of the computer, one of them comes on briefly. Not sure if that means anything.

I had initially assumed that this was a software and not a hardware problem and I still think that's probably the case, but is there anyway to fully test the ethernet card?

Any other ideas are certainly welcome!

Failure on both Windows and Linux means most likely a hardware issue. Some of these ethernet cards do go into a sleep mode.

Try loading defaults in BIOS.
If fail, remove battery and AC adapter. Also remove your RAMs (will need to unscrew few screws). Then press and hold power button for 30 seconds. Insert everything back in and try again.

Linux is supposed to setup wireless and wired connections automatically.

Wanted to add: I hope I am not rushing this, perhaps we need to check Linux a bit more, but I am not home to guide you better.

Well, I tried resetting the Bios defaults and then removing the battery and A/C adapter, and didn't make any difference. I didn't go ahead and remove the RAM. By this time I had concluded that it was a hardware problem and I found an inexpensive USB to ethernet adapter that I ordered. It arrived today and problem solved!
