wireless n+ router

hi ive just brought a new laptop with a wireless n card in and the router we have at the moment only goes up to speeds of g
how much more or better performance will i get with a wireless n+ router ?

Using 802.11n (Wireless-N) over 802.11g(Wireless-G) has several advantages. You will get around double the speed compared to a 802.11g connection, in theory. Though i doubt you will notice it for regular internet use, it will be helpful for streaming HD video and things like that.

In most cases, 802.11n will give you more range physical range compared to a 802.11g connection.

Also, if you get a dual-band 802.11n, you can use the 5 gHz band to help reduce interference from other household devices.

Actually, depending on the construction of the house, 802.11n might have a decreased range, especially if using the 5ghz band.

I guess thats why i said "in most cases", and my comment on using the 5ghz band was only in reference to interference with other devices, not range. My apologies if my previous post did not make this clear.

so as far as surfing the net goes i wont get much diffrence BUT iam guessing using a 720p hd web cam on either msn or skype it would make a diffrence ?

Well, obviously the speed at which you can stream is limited by your Internet speed, saying that i think that moving to N is a good idea generally, you should notice a difference in performance, and when it counts, having a N over a G router will certainly make a difference.

Thought I'd add my 10 pence worth...

G class wireless has a speed of 54Mb/s which can roughly stream 1.2MB/s real-time. Not too bad for copying but streaming anything with a high bitrate will seriously struggle.

N class has a speed for 300+Mb/s which is ideal for any HD streaming.

If using skype or any other web based service you are (as already mentioned) limited by your overall Up/down load speed provided by your ISP.

Here are a few of the main difference that should be taken into account in the wireless n vs g contest. The main difference between these two protocols would, of course, be the wireless n vs g range and the wireless n vs g speed. Almost doubling the range and increasing the data transfer to about 10 times, wireless n is the protocol of the future. Wireless n uses four antennas compared to the single one used in wireless g, thus increasing the range and the data rate of the wireless n protocol. The data rate of wireless n is 300 MB/s as compared to the 54 MB/s of wireless g. The range of wireless n, at 70 m indoors and 250 m outdoors, is more than double the range for wireless g, in both indoor and outdoor environments. Wireless n will also provide better connectivity to networks than wireless g due to the four antennas used in the wireless n protocol, and will also feature better range than wireless b/g.

Just to add my two-cents ... my own experience, being in a similar situation, is that when I had a mixture of devices ( "G" and "N"), I had to operate the wireless router in Mixed mode -- and in that case, I saw no real improvement in the transfer speeds between the two devices.

When I quit using the "G" devices, and changed wireless router to use "N" only, I saw a dramatic jump in performance of the "N" devices.

I've read that using mixed mode does degrade overall performance -- but that just might have been my experience.

Im with Mark on this one. I have setup a few different wireless networks and never see a real difference between g and n on a mixed network. I remember once reading somewhere that routers will always stay on the lower band if a lower item is there connected to it. So Im going to say what if you have a mixed network you might not see the difference with using one item thats N and the others that are G. You will see a difference once you change all your devices to N.
