With Windows Blue, Microsoft may (finally) do the right thing

MS is facing a big challenge.

There is the recent mobile/portable market, which they missed so far.

More than that, the race is on to get the users into cloud services = subscriptions.

The potential rewards are enormous. At the users expense, of course.

MS can't sit by and let Google and Apple carve that up between them.

If MS released another solely desktop os, that doesn't get anyone into their online services.

If they release an os just for tablets/phones , they are fighting head on with the established players who have a massive lead.

MS are trying to leverage their massive desktop user base into the clouds. They are trying to do that with the 8 metro thing.

They messed it up so far.

They are able to have another go.

What if a company was using Microsoft cloud for data and programs and decided they wanted to use another cloud provider; how smoothly would that transfer go if it could be done at all.
Just think of data alone. Transferring data to a cloud and checking for data corruption after done. Then transferring it to another cloud owned and operated by a competitor cloud company and checking for corruption and then back to company for their use. Now if their is corruption what does the company do about it. Cloud company A blames it on Cloud company B and Cloud company B blames it on Cloud company A.
Cloud company A says they can't help because they no longer have your data and Cloud company B says they can't help because they received corrupted data from Cloud company A.

Do you understand why I get headaches? I think of things like this.

If I was running a data cloud storage company I would make sure in the small print the usability or not of the service was purely the users problem. Also anyone in their right mind would never just have one back up? For example my music collection is backed up on 4 different PC's . Also backed up on original CD's and burnt CD's and DVD's for the on-line stuff. If you are going to use the cloud, better make rainy day plans to use another cloud based provider somewhere else. So here in the US I would use a provider based here and also one in Australia or New Zealand about 12 hours different time wise. Not that I intend too, I prefer to have my stuff locally where I know nobody is trying to look at it. The cloud services had better have seriously good security and personal who work there are not part time script kiddies.

I do believe as the Cloud wars start you will be seeing a lot of what you call script kiddies to compete with pricing. Security to me has always been a big question. Who will protect your things better than you?

i would love to see MS come out with a 7" version, then I would consider purchasing it with Windows 8 Pro, there are rumors about it, guess time will tell

The 7" tablets are already in the works! As far as which version you likely wouldn't see Pro on any 7" model however. That's for larger models that offer a little bit of expandability over the smaller embedded OS type devices.

The fruit company only has one OS to put on their stuff! As for Windows the tablets and other small devices wouldn't have any use for the increased hardware support as well as other additional features you see in Pro or Ultimate over HP. You likely wouldn't be found running the XP Mode on tablet either! Why put on features you can't use anyways? Keep it simple says MS!

As for MS, they need to know that simple is the way Aero in Windows 7 handles your windows, organizes stuff and enables the posibility to see live previews or looking for the progress of a download hidding other windows by just hovering over a preview. Simple is having all your configurations organized in a window. Simple is having a search bar in start menu, frecuently used programs and ALL in a simple and little menu that organizes everything in folders and subfolders. Simple is keeping your desktop CLEAN!

8 is far more then just being dumb try "Fully Retarded"! You take a main central point where everything extends outward from and replace that with this over here hidden under that which belongs over there and then have more hidden where no one can find in unknown right click menus and toolbars and wonder why people want to dump 8 as fast as they get it?! -To perform the exact same simple tasks you now need to take extra steps as well as trying to have a blast keeping more then one window open without 3rd party help! While most will pin things on the taskbar if not running an app like Rocket or CircleDock and only use the Start orb and menu to shut down or sleep here I extend other things by copy and paste of shortcuts dragged into folders which become addon toolbars off of the main taskbar you still have the central point to refer back to in all previous after Win 3.1, 3.11 while 8 does away with the common sense desktop approach entirely simply to promote 8 tablets! "-Oh we shouldn't have much worry!" say MS as they scoff at desktop users who still have 7 to run about how 8 is something else entirely. "We gave them something good to last while we toy around with tablet and ARM to mesh it up with the Fruit Co. and Googleatabloidism!". MS has decided to flex it's mighty muscles and swat the blog writers and desktop users away(ignore all the complainers) while pursuing their assault on the competition! -In other words the entire focus is on mobile while "dumbing down" things for the desktop side of the OS. And then most are asking now if Blue will be what should have been originally a Desktop edition compared to 8 Tabletis? What MS was simply saying was this is our new Tablet version you can still run on a desktop if you like it or not! If you are only looking at getting the new without worry of conseqences from abandoning a working "Desktop" OS notably then you can point and click at enlarged tiles designed for touch and swipe on tablets on your 20" or larger lcd display. -MS of course would simply say: "Remember we are only selling 8 for the 13.1 and smaller screens in case you don't like how it looks!" And the word of advice goes to follow that Win 8 was never intended for the desktop to begin with just available as something new to toss on new OEM desktop pcs without regard there. MS is pushing RT and 8 on ARM and Surface Tablet as their main objective. -You don't think you would ever get a working av/malware program with any past version do you? Can't have complaints that the new Surface are becoming malware laced at all?! on the other hand! MS antispyware apps, Windows Defender, etc. have always been free and garbage never actually upto par in the av industry same going for the MSSE for Vista and 7 while what is now seen in 8 does actually? MS schemes at work!

Well, I've had W8 on this since the RTM came out, and I must say that, out-of-the-box, I hated the new interface, although the underlying OS did work well.

But I installed Classic Shell, which not only replaces the missing start-menu with one that's actually better than the standard Win 7 one, but lets you bypass the new interface completely. I also customised the new interface so that, on the odd occasion where I do use it, it isn't so overtly ugly. See below for a pic of my W8 desktop with CS.

And underneath, once some customisation is done, it looks and works much like W7, except for the flat, ugly looks. In fact, I'd love to see the improvements made 'under the hood' to W8 available in an SP for W7.

The sad thing is that so many won't get to experience the good things about W8 because of that accursed interface, and MS' pig-headedness over it.

I'll shut-up now...

A buddy of mine was trying to convince me to switch to 8 for similar reasons of bypassing the metro, and replacing the start button. Also he claimed that the OS was a bit smoother and performed better, but nothing that was earth shattering. Basically he described 7 out of the box, with perhaps a little more OS performance and I simply responded "I already have windows 7, why pay for 8 only to turn it back to 7?" It hit him like a ton of bricks that basically all he did was pay money to turn off the features he paid for and turn it back into what he already had on his computer.

I suppose that is why a lot of people do not want to buy 8 and use the "simple" customization programs to make it more like 7, because they already have bought 7

Lets face it people! Win 8 was never intended for the desktop to begin with. Everything involving is surrounding the MS Obsession with competing with the Fruit company and Googleglabungleup in the mobile market at the cost of a few main items familiar to desktop users. (1)-You wouldn't be able to use the Media Center too well on tablet if at all. That had to go! No dvd drive to watch dvd movies? (2)-Sacrifice codecs and video support in WMP 13 and simply lighten up the OS entirely working on the MinWin kernel a little further and what do you have? Stripped Down form of Windows! better suited for embedding on hand helds as well as run on Compact units. (3)-Design the latest to suit the tablet platform in both Windows RT for ARM and Win8 "Modern" for Surface Tablet leaving the desktop users twiddling their thumbs wondering the who the what is going on?!?!?! Now we hear about the new Start button for Metro being brought in by Blue to somewhat offer some type of "compromise" to the MS botch up 8 has been getting for a label. Don't feel too bad Wenda. I have a copy of Windows 8 Pro on a virtual machine. It hardly sees the light of day. You could say I am not a Windows 8 fan, frankly I don't like it and what is the point of buying it and making it look like 7 with a 256 colour video adapter from 1995 when I already have 7 with aero and the classic desktop ? I have most of the recent OS except Windows ME. I was a NT4 fan and a Windows 2000 long time user too. Did not like Vista but too be fair on current hardware it runs just fine. On the hardware it was sold on not so much. I paid $15 for my 8 and got a free media centre too. I just prefer 7. MS has taken away choices and most of us have chosen not to jump on the M$ train wreck that windows 8 is.

Didn't mean my post to convey any form of defense in regards to your response so I apologize if it came off that way. I only meant to tell a story that I was reminded of when I read your post.

You collect OS? Do you have some sort of museum of OSs that has tons of versions of OS?
