Good day,

I wonder if someone can help me out. WOL on the local network works ok. :)
When connecting via the www it doesn't.
routermodel wag160n nat ok via different ports
as it works locally the nic and bios should be ok

Possible that the linksys is the culprit.

any ideas are welcome.

thanks.

Are you using "homegroup" and IPv6 on a network with mixed OS'es?

Good morning,

I am using MSHOME as workgroup and use ipv4-addresses.
As I wrote earlier within the network itself all is working so I would think that it has to do with the router.
I did patch though the usual ports with nat to this pc. I used tha same method to reach my nas form outside on the net. That works fine so this shouldn't be the issue.
Still it won't start.
I am using the most conventional sites to log via the net.

Thanks for replying.

Most routers block so-called "IP directed broadcasts", because this could be used for a severe denial-of-service attack from the internet. And WoL uses Ethernet broadcast packets to send the Magic Packet on the LAN which the router (and switch) floods on all Ethernet ports. On bigger routers you can explicitely allow IP directed broadcasts, most DSL routers do not give you the option.

That is the problem. To overcome the pb you need to proxy WoL by means of a small plug-in on another server on the LAN (ie. a NAS, a dreambox etc) which you can access from outside, for example by http.

The way I always do this is to remote into the always on server and initiate the WOL from there.

Not that elegant but it works.

you can try opening port 7 on the router and mapping that port to the internal network devices you wish to wake, although as stated above the router may block the packet type anyway
