"working in background" mouse continuation

I woke up this morning to find that my mouse would not go back to normal. It continuously has the "working in background" blue/green circle next to it and won't stop. This is bugging the ever-loving CRAP out of me! I went into the mouse properties and found nothing wrong. I was going to do a system restore, but I never manually set a restore point. For some God-awful reason, Windows 7 doesn't periodically set restore points. I'm running Windows 64-bit Home Edition. I have also had no problems with this computer until now. I'm doing a virus scan right now with Trend Micro. I did not visit any dangerous websites between last night and this morning. Please help!

As a follow-up to my first post, I know I can just change the appearance of the "working in background" option, but I would much rather find the solution to the problem if possible.

Task manager says that all programs that are running (currently only 2: google chrome and trend micro) are working properly (there is no "not responding" text).

Hmm. Just found some startup programs previously unchecked that are now checked (Apple Update, HP Imaging Center, etc.). I forgot these companies like to re-enable their startup positions when updated. I'll have to uncheck and restart those after the virus scan.

Check the 'Processes' tab. You can sort by CPU usage (click on the CPU column header. If you don't see any proccess using excessive cpu time, click on the 'Show processes from all users' button bottom left.

The only one using excessive memory is svchost with roughly 226,000K. Otherwise, the next ones are my anti-virus program (which was started after I starting having this problem), Google Chrome, Windows, Explorer, etc. This has all been there before though (although I don't know about svchost because I never run task manager with the "show processes from all users" button clicked).

Have you rebooted or has 'system startup' just meant coming out of hibernation?

If rebooted, have you checked the performance tab in TM? What's going on there?

The first thing I did was reboot, but I haven't rebooted since I have unchecked some programs from my startup list. I will do that after the anti-virus is finished.

OK. Might not be a bad idea to run malwarebytes as well (full scan). I may shortly be offline for a while, but there are many here who can help.

Just rebooted the computer after unchecking some startup programs. It worked I probably should have done that in the first place Anyway, I just have to remind myself that companies like Apple like to recheck their programs on msconfig. Quite annoying if you ask me. Thanks for your help!
