Wrong version recoverymgr.exe while resetting windows 7

Hi

I tried to reinstall my windows 7 with the build-in recovery manager (HP).
Everything went well, I did'nt take a back up of my files (with the recovery manager) and i don't need them. The manager fragmented my C and prepared my laptop for the recovery. Then disaster strikes.

After rebooting and showing the windows loge, a prompt screen telled me that my C:\RM\RM\recoverymgr.exe was not the right version for my windows. And I needed to download the right version, (32bit or 64bit). Short after that the screen disappeared and the recovery went on.

After a while he started installing all my default drivers. Again disaster.

After 3 times showing me these errors the pc rebooted and showed a window which telled me that the recovery of my windows 7 failed.
There was a button for details, but it didn't give me anything.

Now how do I fix this. I can't go on windows on my pc, when I start up , it goes to the recovery manager.
Everything is legit, no illigal software and I just followed the recovery manager.
I already did a memory test and recoverypartition test and no errors where found.

Also : On my laptop , on a different partition I have installed Ubuntu, but I don't think that would effect the recovery manager (I don't use it a lot and never did anything crazy with it). The dual boot worked ALWAYS fine, never problems. I can't access it now, because I would have to reinstall GRUB , but that is only possible if Windows is installed (I suppose)

details of my laptop:
Windows 7 home basic
compaq presario cq71 notebook
intel dual core t6600 64bit
3 partitions, C, D (with windows recovery) , and another which I couldn't access (or see) with windows, my ubuntu partition. , total of 500 GB (I thing SATA)
nvidia geforce g103 (I think)
4 gb RAM

You could try running recovery again from the recovery partition using the F11 key when the computer first turns on. If it continues to fail, you need recovery DVDs.

Did you create your recovery DVDs for your computer as strongly suggested by HP when you first bought your computer? If not, you will have to contact HP and ask for the recovery DVDs and pay to have them sent to you. It sounds like your recovery partition may have corrupted files on it now.

I didn't make recovery DVDs. I thought that no program could change something on a other partition (I was wrong).
How could this happen? I mean, never have I accessed these files. A virus? Incorrect update?

I am able to access everything on my pc via ubuntu, even the recovery partition. Is there a way to repair the corrupt files? Or copy the right ones to it?

also, (but I think the answer is no): Is it possible to use the recovery DVDs from another laptop? Or must it be the one from my pc?

Files on another partition can become corrupted without being touched by another program or by you opening them. Just installing Ubuntu may have caused them to be corrupted because they may have been moved during partitioning for Ubuntu. They could also become corrupted from the drive being in use a lot. That is why it is recommended to create the recovery discs when you first start your computer after buying it.

You cannot use another computer's recovery discs unless it is the exact same make and model as the computer you are using them for, and even then it may not work.

Try running e2fsck on the drive/partition containing the recovery files through Ubuntu, then try running recovery again using F11 when the system starts up.

solved it

Windows 7 works with a activation code (yeah, big news :sarc: ). So you just need a clean Windows 7 [your version] dvd. You can install any language with your code. with clean I mean no HP version, Toshiba, or what so ever. (also no cracked or adjusted, just the normal dvd)

You install it. Login. After you did this, go to computer properties and change the code to your code. Now you can activate it, and you have a legal version. After this, you will have to install ALL your drivers, I mean ALL. Go to the site of your laptop brand , it should be easy to find.
of course, this will mean you lose all the pre-installed software.

If you are lucky, you can use the recovery dvd of someone with the same laptop as yours since the activation works with a code. make sure it is exact the same. You can do this by checking which recovery dvd he has to buy. this is determed by the product number of your laptop.

In any case, you better make a recovery dvd on your own, to avoid all this.

as for reply on writhziden:
ubuntu was not able to run e2fsck (yes I checked with wine (the windows emulator).
f11 didn't do anything new, because it ended up with the same recovery manager.
also: I once used the recovery manager on the partition on my windows even with ubuntu installed. But this could just be luck.
