WTF is going on with Windows 7

I have always used the same programs on all Windows platforms since as long as I can remember, and now all of a sudden with Windows 7, I'm having all kinds of bizarre issues.

For starters, when I installed Firefox, the quick start icon was automatically the Firefox "safe mode" icon, rather than the regular icon it's always been & is supposed to be. I know I didn't put it there. I put the regular one there.

Also, in the notification area, the little arrow I can click to see all the programs that aren't displayed next to the clock... I have a BitTorrent icon. When I click it, nothing happens. It never opens the program like it's supposed to, and like it always has before Win7. Instead, I have to right click the icon & click "Show/Hide BitTorrent." It's a total pain the neck.

And now, as if these two annoyances weren't already enough, I downloaded VLC Player, which I specified to be the default player for all video file types. I double clicked a movie to watch it, and surprise surprise, Windows Media Player's "setup" screen comes up (since I haven't set it up or registered it or even used it yet). SO annoying & SHADY (true Microsoft style). So I right clicked the video icon, went to OPEN WITH, selected VLC Media Player & clicked the "Make this the default.." checkbox. Double clicked the video again, and guess what comes up? Stupid POS Windows Media Player again! I had to open VLC, go into the preferences, find the file associations list, re-confirm everything, and save it in order for it to finally work.

I actually like Windows Media Player, but I hate Windows & all of their shady BS & monopolizing SO much that I refuse to use it. I don't trust MS anyway. I am simply biding my time until Chrome OS comes out, and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen fast enough. Microsoft is completely out of control with their controlling BS. I can't wait for Google to blow you out of the water just like Apple is doing. I am so f'ing fed up with you. I gave you a fair chance, and I really wanted to like Windows 7, even after the Vista disaster nightmare, but now it's just starting to piss me off. One or two problems here & there is to be expected (especially with Windows), but I've had this PC for less than a week, and am already having all these random issues that I've never had before. I"m over it. Your days of monopolizing are coming to an end, and I will be the first one running from you when that day comes. I f'ing HATE not having the choice to get a different OS when I buy a laptop. And therefore, I f'ing HATE you, Microsoft. Blow me.

Did yiou perform a "clean" install or an upgrade?

An upgrade is not the route to take. It leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.

Save all you Documents, Pictures, contacts, videos, music, etc to a flash drive,

Be aware, you will need to re-insatllall your 3rd party applcations.

It's a clean install

It came with my new PC, so it's as clean as it gets. This isn't anything new... MS tries so hard to subtly (and many times, not-so-subtly) censor users from preferred programs like Firefox. There is a very good reason that 47.5% of all internet users choose Firefox, and only 12.8% use IE8 (Browser Statistics). Once a rival OS comes out, MS is toast. Just sayin...

All I know is that I'm totally fed up with MS and so is everyone else. Even though Win7 is getting pretty good reviews, it doesn't mean people want to be using it. They're forced to. Linux isn't user friendly enough, and people are either afraid to switch to Mac or it's too expensive. Once Chrome comes out & masters its OS, it's all over. All bets are off. I can't wait...

I use the OS only.

I prefer to use freeware and open source apps only

To remove the ridiculous arrow drop down box that you have to try to locate the icon,. go to Start > Control Panel> Notification Area Icons and check the box at the bottom left side of the window.

well this is the first time i have heard of someone hating windows 7 as strongly as you there are some problems
but it is a new Os so everything can't be perfect if you are having problems and don't want windows 7 install xp or vista.

Linux isn't user friendly enough

They tried to make it more user friendly to attract Windows users, but it's really an OS for SysAdmin/Programmer/Engineer types. What they seem to have accomplished is just to deter the type of person who was already inclined to use it by dumbing it down.

Kind of like trying to attract people to Jazz with Smooth Jazz. It ain't the same. If you water it down nobody wants to drink it.

Those are some insanely minor issues to have a stroke over...

I had some genuinly larger issues with my W7 install on my first/main machine. But this weekend I took some sligtly older hand me downs from a friend and slapt togeather a new media machine. Installed W7x64 with about 6 mouse clicks and came back to a completely functioning system in every way. Just needed to pick my HDTV out mode, install sharky's codec package and I was back in no time.

I've never had an install of an OS (Windows or Linux) go so smooth.

Hi all

I've used loads of OS'es from IBM mainframes to the latest incarnations of Windows

MS products aren't ANYTHING LIKE as horrible as people make out - and don't tell me people don't have trouble with Apple computers etc etc.

Any OS will have its quirks and problems - Windows included - but so far W7 seems to be the easiest and most trouble free OS I've had to deal with. - XP had problems when it first came out - now conveniently forgotten - and I won't even begin to describe potential and actual pitfalls that await the unwary or inexperienced Linux user.

If you READ the manuals and do a little bit of research before posting about a screenful of basically venomous remarks of little merit without really describing what's going on you aren't going the right way about getting any assistance (especially with only 2 posts on a Windows 7 Forum).

I think you'll find with a very little research that Windows 7 has been extremely well received (not only by THIS community but by the public at large) .

If you don't like MS products - then don't use them. There's plenty of other choice out there - but you won't find them as easy to use (or as cheap).

Cheers
jimbo

Ok I have 4 computers using Windows 7 and it's worked better than any operating system I've had. I haven't had any conflicts except when I'm trying something new like testing a 3rd party firewall and getting a blue screen. I just go to safemode and uninstall it and I'm good to go. I like to start out with fresh installations because I can test the software one by one to see if I have any conflicts. A lot of times we blame the OS when it might be the software that's causing the problem. I am also a Linux user with dual boot installations to two of my computers. I think Microsoft has a gem in this OS and I've never known any OS to be perfect, to tell you the truth. I don't defend any company cause no one's paying me, but I can surely vouch for things that work. If you have any questions on Win7, please feel free to ask me and if I can fix the problem, I'll be glad to help :)
