XP Mode hangs when trying to shut down

I've got Win XP Mode running in Windows 7 Pro, and it's hanging up on "shutting down the virtual machine".

The XP Mode window has closed, but the little status bar hasn't disappeared yet.

It's been 4 hours and it's not going anywhere.

When I open the Virtual Machine folder, it shows as "Running".

Is there a way to force it to shut down?

If I restart Win 7, will that corrupt anything? I'm not sure what else to do.

Any thoughts?

When this happens, you have to stop Virtual PC process (vpc.exe) from Task Manager > Processes. It's useless to wait, if it hasn't closed properly in a few minutes it won't close.

In worst case you need to reinstall XP Mode, but for instance I have had XP Mode to "crash" like this a few times and the only thing that has happened is that next time XP Mode asks if I want to start in Safe Mode because Windows was not not closed properly.

As in any other computer, it is important to find out why this happened to avoid it happening again. Next time when in XP Mode, check its Event Viewer.

Kari,

Thank you! I was unable to shut it down by stopping vpc.exe under Processes in TM, but I was finally able to stop it under Applications. I checked the Event Viewer and did not see anything out of the ordinary.

Fortunately it came back up with no problems!

If this happens again (let's hope not!), right click the vpc.exe process in Task Manager and choose End process tree from context menu, instead of clicking End process button. This forces Windows to end not only the Virtual PC process but also all related processes like XP Mode.

Happy virtual computing ;)
