Solved Yahoo Mail hacker attempt?

Hello,

A few weeks ago I read on yahoo news that 75 million email accounts were hacked so as a precaution changed my password.

Here's what happened last few days-

I am using google chrome as browser.
Unable to login yahoo email, got this message or similar-"numerous attempts to access your account", I then was asked security questions that I was unable to answer, the question was - Nickname for your son? ,,well I don't have any kids and Where did you meet your spouse?..I was never married.


I tried avgfree didnt find any virus. malwarebytes also few others, no threats found.
I had an extra HD I could use so I installed win7 on this empty HD, installed MB drivers etc, and was able to login to my yahoo email from this other newly installed OS, so apparantly my other HD had infection of some type !

Have a few questions please.

1) Do you recommend giving yahoo a recovery phone number for help if unable to get into email because of "numerous attempts to access your account" or "trying to sign in from a device we don't recognize" or "haven't seen you in a while , please answer security questions so we know its you" ETC ?

2) Do you recommend a text or a voice phone call to get the code?

3) Or..using an alternative email for code to be sent ?, yahoo help recommends using a "non" yahoo account for code to be sent to email .

4) How can I view/change my Security questions/answers that I gave when setting up yahoo account?

5) any idea what kind of virus/malware infected my first HD?

6) Can you recommend any anti hack or anti virus software to avoid this in the future?

Sorry for the long story but, had to tell so you would understand what happened.

Who knows if you had a virus, but if you did, it's not what's causing your Yahoo Mail problems!

ok I give up, what is causing them? just yahoo is fading into the night?
Then explain to me why I wasn't able to access my email on one HD/OS,....and WAS able on another install HD/OS? ,,,nevermind you have been enough help

A friend of mine had the exact same problem as yours when he used his laptop. When he went to a desktop machine in the same room using the same router and modem (=same IP) he had no issue accessing Yahoo Mail. The next day he was able to get to Yahoo Mail with the laptop, which was virus- and malware-free all along. There is no explanation except Yahoo was screwing up.

I did this today...hard drive A (infected) unable to access email. Hard drive B new install able to access email, same motherboard, same IP, same modem, same router, same room. 5 minutes later try Hard drive A , and still unable to access email, 5 minutes later try hard drive B and able to access email, , so it (HD A) was infected , and still is and will be deleted.

*Anyone have any answers to my 6 questions above post #1? Would appreciate that , thanks

1) Setup as many security options as you can, the more the merrier I say.

2) Text is good enough for me, I don't want to be called about a security code at an inconvenient time. Text will be just as effective as it's still the same number.

3) See 1. As well as text I also have Hotmail as an alternative to Gmail and Gmail as an alternative to Hotmail. I have never used yahoo so can't comment on that.

4) Unsure about Yahoo, but it should be under security options and you should be able to change it whether you want to.

5) I have never heard of a virus which will cause many failed login attempts on the drive. Very strange. If it was hacked and you're truly worried and have all your stuff transferred on to your new drive then I would just format the original drive. Only as a last resort though.

6) I use these:

Avast Free (just Antivirus, custom install without all the extra bloat).

Comodo firewall free (again, Custom install without all the bloat, Firewall and HIPS set to custom rules and Viruscope and Auto-Sandbox turned off).

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (on demand only).

SuperAnti-Spyware Free (on demand scanner which is good for eliminating tracking cookies).

SpywareBlaster Free.

Cryptoprevent (immunises my system against Ransomware/Crypto Viruses).

Removed Flash and Java from my system (Chrome is my main browser which has its own built in Sandboxed Flash player. I also have Chrome plugins set to On Demand).

AdBlock and WOT in Chrome.

If you want to use a paid AV then BitDefender often scores well. I often find though that the free software with the obvious common sense (not opening weird looking email attachments or browsing obscure sites, etc) is usually enough to avoid any malware.
