The internet on my laptop has stopped working from time to time and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point goes on top of the internet icon on the bottom right. Now it has stopped working completely for about a week and hasnt come back like before. I use the same internet cord on my pc and Xbox and it works fine, just not my laptop. What can I do?

Please, if you know, try to explain it to me as if I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing at all lol... I'm not that good with the names of hardware or software.

Welcome to the forum Gibb94.

I don't have a laptop so don't know much about them but have you made sure that yours is turned on for Wi-Fi, I believe there is usually a switch somewhere perhaps you've managed to turn it off without realising it.

If you could post back with more details about your machine and how you connect to the Internet it would help the experts to give you more help, don't forget we can't see your machine and without details we don't have much to go on.

It sounds like you are running a wired ethernet connection from your laptop to a router and then to a modem but like Joan said above the more info you can get us the better.

Do you use the same ethernet cable for your pc and your Xbox as you are using for your laptop? If not, lets start by trying a different cable from one of those devices.

I have one internet cord in my room. I use the same cord for my pc, xbox and laptop. I can get internet when its in the pc or the xbox, but not on the laptop. What other information can I give you? If I gotta go digging through my computer files to find some kinda info, it would help if you let me know where to find it.

What is the make and model number of your laptop?

Try doing an orderly power reset, see if that helps.

Power off (Shutdown) laptop, then router then modem (cable or DSL). Router and modem you power down by removing the power plug from each one.

Now power things on in reverse order, starting with the modem.
Wait a minute or so for the lights to stabilize, then power on the router.
Again, wait a minute for the lights to stabilize.
Finally, power on the laptop, see if you have internet now.

As Joan Archer said, make sure the switch that controls the Wireless is on. If you provide the make and model number we can tell you where that switch is located. It's usually identified by an icon that looks like a small radio tower with waves coming out of it.

Edit: Using wired connection, not wireless.

Not sure if the WI-FI switch is relevant in this case since he appears to be using an Ethernet connection.

Have you tried Ztruker's suggestion yet? If that fails, have a look at the Network Adaptor status in Device Manager.
Start, Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Network Adaptor.

Let us know how you are making out.
