No problem with a repair install per se but the running of updates to bring it current is an issue. How much time are we realistically looking at here regarding updates? Any idea?

Repair Install is quite easy to perform. Follow Snick's instructions.

Basically . . .

[1] Run Extended Disk Cleanup [see Disk Cleanup – Extended in My => BATCH PROGRAMS [Standalone] in my signature at the bottomof this post].
[2] Backup ALL the data you don't want to lose [just in case].
[3] Make a System Image.
[4] Perform the Repair Install.
[5] Update the OS [WU's].

An alternative to DISM++ [and preferred] is SIMPLIX.

Download the latest SIMPLIX UpdatePack [for Win 7 SP1 x86-x64 / 2008 R2 SP1 x64] from here => SIMPLIX UpdatePack.

Run the UpdatePack => click Install.

It will update your OS automatically [it will re-boot a couple of times during the update process which is normal] and DOESN’T include any telemetry updates or processor checks [disables/patches detection of processor generation and hardware support when scanning or downloading updates through WU]. It installs the correct USB3 drivers [if needed] and cleans up when it has finished. It requires NO user input.

Repair install failed at 99%. I give up on this one. I'll try a couple of other things but I'm tired of fighting it if that doesn't work out.

It does take quite a while!
It is always the last process that takes the time and appears to be stuck or non responsive, be patient!

No I got a message saying it could not rebuild the boot configuration and the installation was aborting.

I thought I posted a reply to this earlier but apparently not. I didn't see your reply before my last posting otherwise I would have acknowledged it.

No I do not have any other drives connected. I am thinking about doing a clean install and running Simplix to reduce the updating time. Would that be a viable option you think? SSD tools (SSDReady) are indicating that the health of my SSD is sound and has some considerable time left in its projected lifespan.

Yes, I don't see why not!
You just need to do the pre-install backup and get everything ready OS and software wise etc.

Correct!

After you have downloaded the UpdatePack, run it. It scans your OS for any updates needed and then installs them. It doesn't include any Telemetry or suspect updates.

Can they be disregarded?

Yes.

One other thing, I am correct in stating that I have to run Simplix several times until it installs all of the updates it lists as still available correct? I started out at 162 and after four reboots I am down to 106 as I type this. I am waiting for as many of those to download and install before the installations are interrupted and I have to reboot again.

Before I mark this thread as solved would you mind answering the following, should I permit WU to run and update the computer or just periodically run Simplix to keep my system up to date? How often should I run Simplix in the event you advise the latter course of action?

I personally would disable [Never check for updates] WU's and then run SIMPLIX once a month when the new SIMPLIX [or DISM++] package becomes available.

I've done that.

Lastly, does Simplix also include Windows Defender updated definitions? It just feels a little weird not running WU at all after all of these years running it--a bit like setting out from home and knowing you've forgotten something but can't think what it is.
