Would you please turn your attention to Display Windows 7 x64 for HP Pavilion zd8000. The ATI Mobility Radeon X600. This installs OK but hangs at the Windows logo, then goes black.

I can try, but I don't know how much help I can be since I don't have a zd8000. I have a zv6000, and they are very different in several key ways, namely CPU architecture (Intel v AMD) and GPU (I have the first gen x200 - the first of the mobility line to use PCI Express )

As there is a 'fix' even for XP on the HP site, this adapter must have been unstable even before Win 7.
I have used the 'fix', which is to remove the battery, plug in a separate monitor.

This works intermittently, but not continuously. Can you come up with a work around as you did for the audio?

I can suggest generic solution:
1.) Uninstall the graphics card drivers completely (make sure to click the check box that says "delete drivers" when prompted to confirm uninstalling the gpu.
2.) Shut-down machine
3.) Unplug any peripherals (that's right, any. Don't have anything extra attached to the laptop) and make sure the laptop is running on AC power (batt can be in or out it shouldn't matter)
4.) Power up, log in to windows. Windows will try to install the graphics card

At this point you have a choice: either go with the drivers that Windows will pull from it's servers via Windows Update; or you can cancel and manually install drivers from AMD site (this will get dicey at best since AMD "officially" stopped supporting Mobility below the HD series )

5.) Power-cycle. Plug everything back in.
6.) Check if everything is working.

If not, please start a different thread and email it to me, 
so that we can keep this thread clean and 
only about zv6000 audio please

For those of us who have been having a major head-ache with ZV6000 after updating to retail, or those of us who never had audio working on the x64 side ever, here is the final solution (provided below with edit for ZV6000):

Download the "Conexant AC97 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)" from http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=ob-51288-1

installing it regularly didn't work but you can make a trick.

1. first, try to install it normally with the driver. it will probably fail but it will be extracted in C:\swsetup\SP35558 by default

2. open the .inf file and locate

3. add this line to it
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,<x>

<x> can be found by going to the device manager, open the unrecognized audio device's property page, select "Details" tab, and select "Hardware Ids" from the Property combo. One of the listed strings should be <x>. it was the top one in my case.
In my ZV6000, <x> was PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3085103C&REV_01

so it eventually looked like:

4. now install the driver manually through device manager. It installed as "Conexant AC-Link Audio" which i find weird since it first was listed as "Conexant Realtec AC-97".

You should now have perfect audio. Note that for those updating from the various Realtec or ATI workarounds, the mute light also finally works again

If you are having trouble installing or it doesn't work after restart, remember that you need to "Disable driver signature enforcement" during boot (F8). You can also edit the boot using EasyBCD so that it will pop-up the menu for you and all you have to do is arrow up twice and select the option.

I don't want to seem insulting to anyone, but why would you load a x64 bit os on a laptop that old? I have a zv6130us and I run 7 x32 on it. I also found every driver it needed including audio (which was through microsoft update). Even though I installed a bigger hard drive and maxed out the ram (2gb), I never thought it would make a good candidate for x64 since its so old. So far, x32 has given me the performance I need from it.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but this is only my opinion.

Thats all i had is x64.. thats wa i installed.. dont feel like buying a x32... is there anyway to install a x32 and use the same activation key?

Toly, it seems you didn't follow my instructions The regular installation is meant to fail as the driver as is from HP is not directly for our audio card.

NOT TO WORRY! I wrote the instructions in as plain english as I could muster! I am sorry that they were unclear for you

However, please follow my instructions here, I have tried rewriting them so that you can follow along more easily.

Since you have already tried the regular install, you should have a folder called "swsetup," in the local drive "C:" in "My Computer." Open the "swsetup" folder and you should see an "SP35558" folder. Please open that folder. [NOTE: if you do not see that folder, please run the SP35558 again. Remember, it will fail at installing automatically.]

Now that you are in the SP35558 folder, please open the "cp6308Ba.inf" file. This should open up in Notepad by default; if it asks you to choose a program, select Notepad manually.

In the "cp6308Ba.inf" you will find the following lines [verbatim]:

What you need to do is edit this file by adding the following line right below (for reference, I have written ***INSERT LINE HERE***, you won't see that in the actual file of course )

Here is where it might get tricky for you if you are not very good at computer stuff. Don't worry, I will try to help you out.

The <x> in the above line needs to be replaced with what is called the "hardware id," which is essentially the name which the computer calls our audio card. This Hardware id can be found by going to the Device Manager. To get to Device Manager, click Start and type in Device Manager.

You will be presented with a new window that basically lists every hardware on your computer. You will see an item for "unrecognized audio device" (or something to that effect, it might be slightly different). Please double click on this item and another window will pop up. That is the property page.

Select "Details" tab, and select "Hardware Ids" from the Property pull down menu. Here is where you will find the line which will REPLACE the <x> that you copied into the "cp6308Ba.inf" file. For me it was the first line. In my ZV6000, <x> was PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3085103C&REV_01 Simply right click on the first line and select "Copy" and paste it right over the <x> in the "cp6308Ba.inf" file.

NOW THE "cp6308Ba.inf" should look something like this:

Notice that the <x> from the original is replaced with the Hardware ID we just found. Leave everything else in this file unchanged.

All you have to do now is install the driver manually through device manager. In the same "unrecognized audio device" Properties window, please go to the Driver tab. Click on "Update Driver" A new window will pop up. Click "Browse my computer for the driver software." Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."

Now, please click the Have Disk button on the lower right. A little window will pop up with the title "Install from Disk." Simply type into the box the following: C:\swsetup\SP35558 and press enter.

Select "Conexant AC-Link Audio" (it should be the only one listed) and click the Next button on the lower right. The computer will now go through the process of installing.

You should now have perfect audio!!!

It will work if you switch to 32bit, but why do that when you can easily install the audio by following the above instructions and saving yourself some cash Please note that not all versions of Windows have licenses for both 32bit and 64bit. How can you check? Well, if you have a "retail version" (one that came in the fancy box), then you have both disks and you can use either 32 or 64 bit. If you have the OEM version, then you are stuck as that license can only be used for the version you have (in this case 64 bits). At least, that is my understanding. (there maybe some hacks that you can do in the registry, since I was able to use an OEM key on a retail install with a simple registry hack, but that might be beyond your abilities if installing a driver is hard for you...sorry, no offense, just trying to save you headache)

salaadin19 good instructions i did everything u said and it doesnt work.. when i go to my device manager i got "other devices" and i have 3 choices one of them is the pci modem the other one is mass storage so i click on my multimedia audio controller.. go to details - device description.. it shows me the same thing in there too "multimedia audio controller" .. is it suppose to be on device description in the details tab ??? so when i got to update my driver and i picked C:\swsetup\SP35558 then it tells me WINDOWS COULD NOT FIND DRIVER SOFTWARE FOR YOUR DEVICE ...
i think from details tab i copied the wrong thing over the <x> .. let me know if it should be on device description... thanks a bunch for ur help

salaadin19 ur a life saver man i got it.. thanks a lot .. i went to my detail tab started looking thrue everything to find something that looks just like ur line so i found PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_3085103C&REV_01\ looks just like urs and it worked.. it was under device instance path.. thanks alot man im so happy.. whats mass storage now lol should i fix that or it no big deal..
