Windows won't update (KB2862152) after system restore.
This started about two weeks ago when I noticed my computer was occasionally shutting down for no apparent reason. I suspected that it was faulty Nvidia drivers because I've had problems with them before. I restored the system to before the problems occurred and then Windows just kept failing to start up. I eventually figured out that the restore messed with the Nvidia drivers (plus an unrelated minor driver to add to the confusion) and that prevented Windows from starting up normally. After a clean reinstall of Nvidia software didn't fix the problem, I noticed that Windows wouldn't update ('Failure configuring windows update') so I set out to eliminate that problem. I ran SURT and an sfc scan which only made the problem worse by making Windows inconsistently genuine
![]() I'm not in much of a hurry, since I can just start it up without the Nvidia drivers but I'd like to be able to play my games again, so if someone can help me get my updates working and fix the ungenuine problem (it's genuine when I start it up but it will randomly become ungenuine) I can get some solid ground to fix the Nvidia drivers and post in the driver forums if I have to. |

I'm trying to upload the CBS.zip file but I'm getting internal server errors, so bear with me if you need it.

Turned out that the file was too large. I omitted the oldest .cab from the .zip file but I still have it if it's needed.

SFC and CheckSUR scans are clear - but the background errors in the CBS.log files make interesting reading.
They areall related/similar to this one... 2013-11-23 13:09:02, Info CSI 0000000b@2013/11/23:13:09:02.620 [161]"SPP Installer: ProcessInstallOrUninstall (amd64_Microsoft-Windows-Network-Security_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18283_neutral_48f826ae) completed with hr=0xc0000022" The 0xc0000022code is usually caused by permissions problems, or a failing hard drive. Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan.... Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories Right-click on the Command Prompt entry Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up. At the Command prompt, type CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter key. You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot. The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient! After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - Look in the Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for details of the CHKDSK results - filter on events from the source Wininit |

It has done some sort of a cleanup, but no serious issues it seems:

Still the same error code??
The drive itself seems to be healthy enough - 0 bad sectors. See if this helps... Open Windows Explorer (Computer) Navigate to the C:\Windows folder Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it select Properties Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white. Click on Apply. Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK. Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button. Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes. OK out, and exit Windows Explorer. Reboot twice try Windows Update, then post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log |

Same error code (C0000022). Before it shuts down it stops at 30%, reboots, stops at 67%, gives the failure message, reboots and finally gives the message again.
I have a very long windowsupdate.log attached and thank you for the help so far. |

OK - this may give us a little more information....
Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we may be able to see what the problem is. https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response. |
