Today I just upgraded from IE10 to IE11 on two laptops, having seen that IE10 is not supported since January. After updating I ran Windows update, and an Important update to IE11 appeared - KB3134814. I installed it and restarted and immediately the Windows 10 icon appeared in my task bar (I have been rid of it for months until now).

So I checked in installed updates to go and remove it and noticed that KB3141092 had also been installed - not something that had been offered or ticked it just appeared along with KB3134814. I googled to see what 3141092 is and apparently it is for Windows 8! (Both our laptops are Windows 7) and is installed by the back door and is causing issues apparently. So I uninstalled it, hoping the Windows 10 Icon would go. Restarted and Windows 10 icon still there.

So I then went to uninstall the Important IE11 update KB 3134814 and my computer is now frozen shutting down on the screen saying "Preparing to configure Windows..Do not turn off your computer".

So it seems to me that KB3134814 - the 'Important' update for Windows 11, is not safe to install and also installs the Windows 10 icon. I had also upgraded our other laptop to IE11 but had not yet done the update, and that one is fine and no Windows 10 icon and no unexpected KB3141092.

I am writing this on the still working laptop and have decided to turn the other one off and try restarting. It is restarting and teling me it is at update operation 19266 of 19266.

It has restarted now, but the Windows 10 Icon is still there and KB3134814 is still in the list of installed updates, so it seems it doesn't want to be uninstalled. Am going to try doing a system restore now.

In the restore points were about 4 items for Windows modules installers (about 4 of them). I just restored back to the latest critical update which included one of the entries for Windows modules installer. Windows 10 icon still there.

So have gone back to the previous critical update (before any of the listings for Windows module installer, whatever that is). Anything before that was not done today.

I did all the patch Tuesday updates for Feb yesterday, unchecking everything optional except for net framework one, and all was ok yesterday. So it is just since installing IE11 and then the update for it.

Am back to IE10 now and Windows 10 Icon has gone. Will install IE11 again, but not the update for it.

I have reinstalled IE11 and the Windows 10 icon has come back again! I haven't done any updates for it so can only assume they are now integral. So I'm sticking with IE10. I don't use it anyway but I think Windows Updates does.

Hi,
I have 3 win-7 installs all have ie11 although I don't use it but none have a GWX icon on the taskbar :/
So I don't believe it is integrated into ie11.

Thanks. It does seem strange. After using system restore I was back to IE10 and the update removed and the icon went. I reinstalled IE11 but not the update and the icon was back again! System restored back to IE10 and it has gone again, although strangely the update for IE11 is still in my list of installed updates and doesn't seem to want to go, despite the system restore.

Result is, I am still on IE10 but don't have the icon. I will look into the GWX thing. As Windows update is the only thing using Internet Explorer, do you think it matters if I just leave it on IE10 as I just don't want the hassle!

Hi,
For one thing windows system restore is okay but as you see it's not all that great at restoring everything
You'd want to use system images instead

As far as the other update that are really win-10 related you might refer to this to get rid of them

Kb3134814

I am running Win 7 with IE11 installed and don't have the get windows 10 system tray icon. I didn't install the KB3134814 update. Automatic updates are turned off so I choose which to install manually and have been running the GWX Tool since reverting my system from Win 10 back to 7. I would suggest to anyone trying to avoid Win 10 to get the GWX Tool to block known updates related to Win 10 and to also get the list of known Win 10 related updates offline and manually uninstall them. I wrote MS a nasty little email about their shady approach to pushing Win 10 on people who don't want it, not that it will do and good though. Research all new updates before installing them even if you are running the GWX Tool just to be safe. Better safe than sorry! There are quite a few updates related to the push of MS's new but crappy OS, so be careful. This is a new low for MS. I hope this gives some insight to some of you out there....just be cautious what updates you install from here on out. Good luck.
