Hi

I run a computer repair business and today I have had numerous customers reporting an issue with Windows 7 not booting and just sitting on the "starting windows" screen

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this today and if any idea of cause i.e. update etc?

Startup Repair fails to fix it

System Restore either won't complete or it completes and boots okay into safe mode, but then exact same issue trying to boot in to normal mode

last known good also fails

When I next go out to one tomorrow I will try clean boot, but in some cases I can't even get into safe mode

All the usual tricks just won't get them working

Yes possibly, most of them I have seen have AVG on them - various different versions though, so not all latest

These are machines I am repairing, rather than ones I have supplied/setup

Checked programs and features on a couple and can't see anything been installed in last few days - and certainly in most cases they were okay last night and in one case first thing this morning - then when rebooted/turned off/on the problem started

Thanks - I had google, but not found those articles - very useful, at least now I know it is likely to be an AVG issue

We have narrowed this down to computers with Trusteer Endpoint Protection and AVG installed. Our fix is to:

1. Start in Safe Mode
2. Uninstall AVG (as trusteer won't uninstall in safe mode)
3. Restart in normal mode
4. Uninstall Trusteer
5. Re-install AVG

Note that when you uninstall Trusteer it has a Captcha which locks out remote access so if you are working remotely you will need to get the user to enter the captca to get remote access back.

Just a bit of feedback----same issue here. Machine locked up on Windows logo. Re-booted in safe mode, uninstalled AVG, re-booted issue solved. Further, tried to re-install AVG and no go. Definitely AVG issue----we will report to AVG so they can document.
