I use Acronis True Image to make full backups of my system. It allows for a full backup to an external drive or cloning of one disk to another. I have had very good luck with it.

This free one is like version 10. It's good, but you no doubt have a newer version with more features :)

Recently upgraded to version 11, better integration into Windows 7 but I miss the UI of 10.

Good question, I guess only a software engineer or an extreme level geek could break down the nuts and bolts of it. But I can say it is a quick process. Backup about 9 min, recovery to a clean disk about 15.

Don't know what you mean by "none of this looks like a definite chance"? But all the programs I listed will clone a hard drive, which is what I thought you wanted?

Read this maybe someone can tell me hoe to do this with this program:sarc:

You are not actually backing up the whole 320 gig, the programs will only back up the data that is stored on the disk. For example my SSD is 128 gb my Windows install with all applications occupies 28 gb. The program backs up only that 28 gb which is used and then (depending on user settings) compresses it resulting in a 17.8 gb file for future use if needed.

Of course you can, the example i used is for a backup. But my program (like others listed) also have a clone option as well. This feature will clone your disk to another connected to the computer. And in mine (Acronis) you have the option to do a sector by sector backup which does clone all sectors of the drive resulting in the full size of the drive. I see no need for this as you are also including the free space of the drive, but when you clone it will only write the used data including partitions to the destination drive. It is a perfect bootable copy of the original you simply replace the original with. This process also takes only about 10-15 min.
