maybe try switching the SATA cables. and for the time being, dont attach any other drive to that cable/channel.

Alright... I've switched them before and it didn't help but I'm gonna try it again.

Switched it to a different SATA channel. My BIOS is recognizing it. I decided to change the PNP on the BIOS to where the OS recognizes the new device and not the BIOS.

Windows started and boom - it recognized the device.... starts to install software and then all of a sudden it says it failed and the "device was unplugged." Unfortunately didn't have time to flash the firmware and later when I tried the firmware installer couldn't find a target drive.

This is driving me insane. Obviously I didn't unplug the drive. I've tried different SATA cables and different connections on the motherboard... Do I have a bad drive?

Thanks! I appreciate it.

I updated the chipset drivers and the thing is still disappearing. I'm wondering if this is a hardware issue at this point? I don't know what to do now...

well, aside from a defective drive, that's about all i can think of, although if it shows up in the BIOS consistently, i'm leaning toward a software issue or firmware (either BIOS or DVD drive).
is it possible to try a different drive on the same port and cable? or a new cable?
maybe try resetting the BIOS to defaults?

Yeah the BIOS is consistently recognizing the drive being there. I wish I could update the firmware if LG's stupid utility would recognize my drive existing. It always says "can't find target drive"

I've switched the SATA cables out and it still gives the same problem. I'm going to switch them again and change the connection on the motherboard to a different one. My BIOS is updated to whatever the latest is. I'll restart and tell you the version #.

i found this on another site. it a little dated, but the syntax should be the same from an elevated command prompt in win7 (right-click the command prompt shortcut and select "run as administrator". i think only the first part applies to your situation:

Vegetta wrote:

Two possibilities:

The program may need to be run from a command prompt specifying the
letter for the drive. Start - Run and run cmd.exe
If you have the program as say C:\DVDburner\update.exe
and the letter for the drive is say X: give
CD \DVDburner
update X:

Second: Such firmware upgrades (please distinguish from the 'drivers'
that are part of windows or of a burning package and which should *not*
be needed from LG) sometimes need to be installed from a DOS boot.
Make a floppy disk by right clicking the drive in My Computer, taking
Format, and checking the 'MSDOS Startup disk' box.

then open the result in My computer and drag that update program, and
data file, onto it.

Set the machine's BIOS at Power on to boot floppy before hard disk, put
the floppy in the drive and boot it; then run the program by giving its
name

I'm not exactly sure if i'm typing it correctly in CMD.exe

I typed: C:\[otherstuff]\Desktop\BH08LS20_200.exe

and it opened the program up and it still wouldn't recognize the drive.

I also tried: C:\[otherstuff]\Desktop\BH08LS20_200.exe update D:

And it didn't work.... am I typing it wrong?

Overheat

I had this problem, drive was always seen in BIOS OK but after a while it disappeared from Win 7, nothing would bring it back until a reboot, I could reproduce this problem every time.

Started scouring the web and found all the suggestions so far, nothing worked. I am pleased to say I 100% for sure found the solution in my case. Heat!

Whilst jiggling the cables yet again I noted the underside panel of the DVD drive was really hot. The system was a fairly new build and like a lot of people I had mounted the DVD in the top most bay of the case to make it easy to reach as the PC is sat on the floor. Heat rises! and up there its completely away from any fan air flow. I had also built the system with minimal cooling and low speed fans because I wanted it quiet.

I ran it without the case sides on and the DVD stayed visible all night. I have moved the drive down the the lowest 5 & quarter drive bay just above the hard drives, at the front of the case is a 92mm fan blowing air over the hard drives and the bottom of the DVD is now catching some of this too.

The good news is the DVD hasn't disappeared for a week now, even with some hard 'burning' use its been 100% perfect.

Maybe not the answer for everyone but maybe for some, even in a shop built or system that used to work it could be caused by failed system fan or clogged dirty vents. Another symptom of overheating, when it was working it burned the 1st DVD OK but soon started having failed following burns, this is due to in use its adding to its own overheating as its worked.

I wish that was it but my bluray drive isn't in the top bay. There are 14 fans in my computer, one being a huge exhaust fan on top.
