Copy Programs from Windows Old to Windows

I did a clean install from Win 7 (32-bit) to Win 7 (64-bit).

Some of the programs that were included with Win 7 (32-bit) are not included with Win 7 (64-bit) such as Roxio and Microsoft Works.

Is it possible to recover these programs from the Windows Old folder?

Thanks
Jessie

Are they in that folder in their "uninstalled" form? If so, I imagine you can.

But I don't think you can copy an installed program in Windows.Old to your current C:\Program Files.

I’m not sure how do I tell? When I go to the folder and look at the properties everything appears to be the same as it is on my OH’s computer running Win 7 (32-bit).
I’m trying to install Microsoft Office but it’s an upgrade and will only install if a licensed MS product such as MS Works is on the Computer.

While you may be able to copy some things from the windows.old folder to the proper locations inyour new windows install, for things like Microsoft Works, that definately won't "install" them :(

It's too late now, but for future reference. What you needed to do was to use the "Programs and settings transfer wizard" on your olf 32 bit windows to save your programs, user account and settings. Then after installing the 64 bit version use the transfer wizard to put them back.

But for now, since those programs don't actually come with windows at all (any version), I'm assuming they were installed by the manufacturer before you got your computer. If there is a computer rescue disk you may be able to restore the old configuration then use the settings and transfer wizard (kind of a long road to take) or maybe there is a disk with the software on it that came with the computer? Or maybe some of it is available on the manufacturers website?

Another shot in the dark: Maybe you can find the registration number for your old microsoft works on a sicker stuck tothe back or bottom or inside of your computer? Sometimes that can be used to install upgrade software even if it isn't actually installed...

Thanks for the speedy reply. The programs were pre-installed by HP but I didn’t get any disks when I purchased the computer. I do have recovery disks but I didn’t want to go that route if possible. I’ll contact HP and ask if they can help.

If you ever ran a Belarc Advisor on your 32 bit system, You can find the product keys for Works and Roxio there. Then you can download trial versions of those programs and apply those keys. That may or may not work depending whether those keys are valid in 64bit. I know it works for Office, but not sure about those two.

I believe that the wizard can only transfer files and settings, not installed programs.

That's a real problem in switching from a 32 bit OS to Win7 X64, as that requires a clean install. Pre-installed stuff would be lost, if it's the sort of software that requires installation. (Most does.)

I don't think it will copy registry keys/entries over to the new install.

Thanks everyone for your help. I found a copy of MS works that I forgotten about and after installing it was able to install MS Office.

Ah your right, says "Transfers Files and Settings". I never did the transfer programs because I enjoy starting clean and reinstalling only those things I actually used often on a new system. I guess I just always assumed it would. THough thinking about it that would be somewhat of a nightmare to pull off codewise :D
