Can I Make The Shutdown Button ASK to shut down?

If I press the shutdown button, windows 7 shuts down. Great, fine... only not really.

If I accidently press the button, it shuts down.

Can I make it ASK if I really want to shut down? That was something I liked about XP. You got to confirm that you meant to press that button if you pressed it. I pressed it and the windows 7 one several times. Very annoyign on the windows 7 end. Can't seem to stop the shutdown process once you press it.

You'd be amazed at how you can miss and click on the damned thing.

Possible, but also reduces the effectiveness of the button. Instead of a nice big button you have to cilck on the tiny arrow button next to it. Not good for in a hurry.

Hello Tannim,

You could also create a shutdown shortcut that has a time delay for how long you want so that you could use an abort shortcut if needed to abort the shutdown within the delay time that you specify.

Change the Power button to Lock

LOL, Brink beat me to this!
But here's yet another option for you...

I'd just change the button to Lock.
When you do this all it does it close to the desktop like fast user switching so you can recover back to full operations in just a second without loosing any work or documents you might have up & running!

Rightclick the Power button, then click Properties, then click the pulldown menu arrow & choose Lock, then click apply.

Then when you want to shut down the computer do it on the computer itself & use the powerbutton on the case or tower.

I just found it, quite by accident.

taskkill /im explorer.exe

will bring up the old school shut down menu - Legacy Shutdown Dialog

You could check out the system control gadgets - the one I use can be tailored to confirm powerful commands like shutdown.

Using the taskkill command as said by Antman, right click on the desktop and create a new shortcut adding this command. So now you have a new icon which will do the job for you instead of typing the command everytime.

ALT+F4 will close/shut down the window in focus. Yes, it will shut down windows.
