"user profile cannot be loaded user profile service failed the logon"

The thread title is a problem that I've been having while trying to create a new profile for work on my laptop. This is the error message that happens every time I try to log into this profile. All the help I've been able to find online has involved old profiles having this error, but I'm only getting this error with newly created profiles. The regedit solution that the windows site gives doesn't work because my computer isn't creating a path in the registry to that user account apparently, and I honestly have no idea how to fix this.

I have already seen this page. The account that I'm having the issue with is not showing up in regedit, so it's a bit difficult to follow the instructions given.

-edit- So, I've been looking through these a bit more. When I create a new user profile, isn't it supposed to be added in the ProfileList folder in regedit? Because it's not showing up in that folder at all.

I'm very sorry for the double post, and I'll try not to do it again in this thread, but I'm pretty sure I figured out what the problem is, somewhat. So, I looked in Event Viewer, and I discovered that I had this error

Windows cannot copy file C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Bici\Bici7_00.sqm to location C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Bici\Bici7_00.sqm. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.

every time I tried to create a new account. So, I figure I need to change permissions to one of the profiles. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure which permissions I'm supposed to change nor do I know how to change them... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you do step 2 in the STEP ONE section to enable the built-in Administrator account while in Safe Mode? In addition, check the items in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial to see if they may be able to help as well.

Have you already tried doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had this user profile error?

Yep, one of the tips did help. The comment section in the link had a guy with the exact same problem that I've been having. I went through everything he did, and I got the same errors in the Event Viewer that he had (look at one of my previous comments) and it looks like all I need to do is change the permissions for one of my user accounts. However, I don't know which account I need to change permissions for, nor do I know how to change those permissions. So basically, I understand what's causing the problem, but I don't know quite how to fix it. Here's his post

I want to say a big THANK YOU for your post. While my problem was similar to yours, my solution was different. It was the research you did to find your solution that helped me, and for that I am very grateful.

With the hope that it will help another reader, I will briefly describe my solution. I actually have Windows 7, but I believe my solution applies to Vista as well.

I tried to add a new Standard User ("Visitor") to my computer. When the user attempted to log in for the first time, we saw the scary message ("The User Profile Service service failed the logon..."); and like you, there was no corrupt registry entry and no backup key to work with.

You wrote that when a user logs in for the first time, Vista uses the contents of c:\users\default as a template; I figured this probably applies to Windows 7, too. You also explained that if Vista can't copy the default profile during the account creation/log in process, then the new user's account won't be created. That was all the information I needed.

A trip to Event Viewer quickly revealed a User Profile General warning in the Application log:

"Windows cannot copy file C:\Users\Default\ to location C:\Users\Visitor\. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights. DETAIL - Access is denied."

I had been adjusting the access control lists on C:\Users and messed up. It was my own fault. Once I added Users (i.e., the Users group) to the ACLs of \Default, \Default User and \All Users, giving it Read & Execute permissions in each instance, I had no trouble creating new users accounts.

I'm having a little trouble interpreting his solution, but his error seems almost exactly like mine.

You might give the system restore at boot a try first to see if that may help before messing with permissions.
