I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC on my laptop since it had a new HD and no OS on it. Would I be able to use an Upgrade option on it (upgrading from RC) or do I have to buy the full version?
+1 you will need the full RTM. It's only really designed to upgrade from XP or Vista, but even then, i'd personally clean install to get the best from RTM when it hits the shelves
You personal files can be saved using the Easy Transfer Tool
Just to confirm, can I upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Seven Professional?
Hello, What that is saying is you may not install from within xp. However you can buy and use the upgrade disk , get a clean install for the lesser price. Lots of ways to go on this. Consider dual booting if you have the space. Or clean install but do not format and then win 7 puts your xp files in a file called windows old and this will be on your c drive, there is a trick to accessing them. Do a clean install after you make back up files of your stuff. Lots of ways to go and most all of them are covered in the Seven Forums Tutorials. Good luck and enjoy the 7. lmI think you can use the upgrade to do a clean install. I don't see any issues just from my readings so far with trying to do this. This is from the FAQ
I am running Windows XP, can I upgrade to Windows 7?
Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.
Not sure about the answer to that one friend. Other than the rich get richer! So why is there a full version and an upgrade version. If in fact the upgrade disk will do a clean install.
The full version you can do a clean install directly. The upgrade version needs to do an in-place upgrade, or if clean installing, there needs to be a qualifying install (xp or vista) already on the hdd. One way round that is to install twice; once with no key, then dvd boot again, with the upgrade key, using the first temp install to qualify the second clean install.
Technically of course, you need an existing copy of vista or xp installed to qualify for using the upgrade install.
