Solved deleted Vista files in Windows 7

I accidenty erased (through ignorance) a great deal of Vista files from Win 7 Ultimate (64 bit) using an early version of Auslogic's Duplicate File Finder. Is Vista an important component of Win 7? Though my machine is running well in spite of this I am wondering if I may encounter problems in the future with newly installed software.

Hope you have a good backup plan or keep your Windows disk handy as programs like that can and will lead to having to re-install Windows faster than any registry cleaner. Hope you research what it is finding before removing things as it is very easy to find yourself deleting system files.

I ran the scan and once completed it stated, "Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations." What does this mean? I also checked out the log folder it created but I don't understand it. Advice?

It's way too late for a system restore as this occurred some time ago. I don't know which Vista files they were but it seemed like a hundred or so.....

I do not run that program anymore. Thanks for the advice. I don't have a Win 7 disk as it came pre-installed on my computer. I may have to buy one now............

Was your Windows7 installation an upgrade install over a previous Vista. It could be that those files were sitting in a windows.old folder. If that were the case, there is nothing to worry.

The computer was ordered from Dell brand new. I can't be sure if they upgraded the OS from Vista or if it was a fresh install. I would imagine it would be a fresh install, but they are very coy about that point.

You don't need to buy a new Windows 7 DVD. Just open the start menu, type recdisc, and click on recdisc.exe. Insert a blank DVD, and it will lead you through the steps of creating your own install disc.

An integrity violation means that a core (I suppose that means system) file is not where it should be and is not in the condition it should be in.

Therefore, it's safe to assume that some of your system files are corrupted and/or not where they should be.

Perhaps another deep scan in Safe Mode followed by a hard drive defrag wouldn't go amiss.

Win 7 repair

Hi, seavixen32. I have already made both a boot disk and a repair disk via Windows back-up. I have a couple of complete system images stored on a couple of external hard drives. Problem is, all of these were made after the Vista files were deleted. I understand that if I had a new DVD of the OS (and if I could figure out what the log file that was created by the System File Checker meant; may have to see a professional) that there is a way of extracting only the deleted files from Win 7 from the DVD and re-install only those. The scan I ran was "sfc /verifyonly" so I haven't tried to repair anything yet. My thinking was how can one repair something that's no longer there?
I am very reluctant to use the recovery partition of my internal drive since then I would lose more than I'd be willing to.
Am I correct in thinking you are asking me to deep scan using the "sfc /scannow" command in safe mode followed by a defrag?

Yes, you are correct. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain and if you do find files that want replacing, do you have access to a Win 7 DVD from a friend or work colleague?
