Hi, sorry to reopen this, but I have the exact same issue as the thread starter.

Only thing I did was to check max memory and windows won't start. Only problem is that when I try to start msconfig from repair mode, it says insufficiant privilieges. Even tough Im using an administrator account, any ideas or tips?

In repair mode I wonder if the owner isn't trusted installer.

One thing you might try is to go to bios and see if there is something like an install mode where it will limit the amount of ram (mine is 1 gig) and last but not least if all these dont work and if you can yank a mem stick it would limit the amt of ram in you system (harder on a laptop than a desktop) the usual disclaimer stuff. I dont know if these will work and dont think they will cause you any grief

Hope these help somewhat and I'll keep an eye out to see if you fix it

Ken: Thank you for your quick response. I didn't try what you said, but you got me thinking... How did the thread starter manage to start msconfig, and I read his post again, he started it from safemode!!

I didn't even think about that, because windows showed me the repair menu as soon as I started the computer, but by pressing F8 I managed to get into safe mode with cmd like he did! And woila!

Turns out windows set the max memory to 256 by itself when I checked max mem setting.

Hours of searching the net, and tearing out hair when the solution was a few clicks away! Thank you again Ken, and thank you garysgold, and thank you sevenforums!!
