Is My HDD failing Hello All,
2 days ago i installed a new Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3TB 7200RPM,
Im using it solely for playing all my loss less music.
Its seems to be chugging along nicely until i ran Ashampoo HDD control 2 to see how things are with all my drives and what it tells me is not good, I think.
Would appreciate any feed back.
I went to the hitachi site to download their tools to diag the HDD but it wont work with a 3TB HDD, a bit silly.

Hello krappo,
If the Hitachi tool does not support your drive I am willing to bet that the Ashampoo HDD control doesn't either. I cannot give you anything concrete either way but my instincts tell me that you should take these readings with a pinch of salt and not let them make you worry unnecessarily.
PS I would suggest making an image of your drive in case the worst happens and if it does, you have nothing to worry about as the drive is under warranty.

Dont want to alarm you Krappo, but the three SMART attributes marked in red in the snip are all related to mechanical problems. If Ashampoo is telling the truth, there may be some issue with the motor or bearings or suchlike with that disk. No harm in having a chat with Hitachi folks or asking in the community forums whether other people had similar experiences. Also request Hitachi to link you to the diag tool for your disk.

Along with what Karl said you may wanna change the drive to a GPT disk since the largest disk windows 7 can see is a 2tb drive for a Master Boot Record drive anything over that then it starts having issue's that's why a Globally Unique Identifer http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26193-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-disk.html would be a good choice or partition the drive so that you don't have partitions over 2tb. Also all the suggestions above should be done.

Its not partitioned and its already a GPT disc.
Any other suggestions as what to do

Here's what I would do if the disk were mine.

Save off anything on there that I treasured.

Use DiskPart to convert the disk back.

Use DiskPart to partition and to format the Disk.

No Partitions bigger than 1 GB. (have you ever seen how long it takes to chkdsk or defrag a disk of that size? 1 GB is my practical limit.

Stop using 3rd party super duper smart reporters. Use the software from the manufacturer.

Ok, went to use diskpart and succesfully removed GPT but am having troubles making 3 equal or close to it partitions
In disk management it sees the disk as 2048 unallocated and 746 unallocated.
Doing something wrong or not right, Any help will be much appreciated

Probably not doing anything wrong.

But to make sure.

run CMD.EXE as administrator
enter following commands:
Diskpart (to run diskpart)
List DISK (to see disk numbers assigned by diskpart)
Select DISK n (where n is the numeral assigned to the 3 TB Disk)
Detail DISK (just to make sure you didn't goof)
CLEAN (this will have the effect of erasing all partitioning info).
create partition primary size=1024000 (this will create a 1 TB partition)
create partition primary size=1024000 (will create a 2nd 1TB partition )
create partition primary (will create a partition using up the rest of the space on the disk)

Exit (to exit diskpart)
Exit (to exit the command shell.

After diskpart.......
Ok, so far so good.
But when i go to disk management to check on hdd, it reports as following...
Disk 5
1000GB raw
1000GB raw
48GB raw
746GB unallocated.
its only given me 2048 in total ???

OK.

I forgot and left out the step in diskpart to format the partitions as NTFS.

You can go back to Diskpart,
select the disk,
select the partition,
and then
format fs=ntfs
if you add quck to that then the format will go faster and might be advisable with the size of the partitions that are being formatted.

The file table takes up space: Whether you also have bad sectors, I do not know.

I have never used such large disks. ChkDsk would show your statistics.

Go ahead and format and then run chkdsk.

I didnt realize what was happening until i gave it some thought.
By removing the GPT it will only recognize the HDD as 2048 in total, which is not what i want, so back goes on the GPT, partitioned and formatted NTFS and this is the result..
The 3TB HDD is now this
909.18GB
909.18GB
976.03GB

Apart from having easily managed smaller partitioned HDD, still getting those poor health messages from HDD control.

Go to the manufacturer's site.

Get his test software I can not fathom that he has a 3tb disk without test software as they must test the drives.

I would not trust one of these super-duper test/reporting programs from a third party.

I just got a reply from hitachi support and even thou there is no official diag tools for 3TB hdd she gave me a link to a beta version of tools that work with my HDD, scanned it and even thou it shows the same numbers as Shampoo hdd control it dosent report any errors.

So i have uninstalled the 3rd party one and have put all files back on HDD.

Thank you for contacting Hitachi GST Technical Support Centre.

We have a Windows version of our Drive Fitness Test you can use. This software is still in beta stage and doesn't give much information. It would tell you whether the drive pass or fail the tests though.

I've attached the software below. Please rename the file to WinDFTSetUp.msi first then double-click it to install. Please make sure the correct hard drive is selected below you run any test.
