Horrible Seagate Goflex_Home Network Drive.

My experience with this 1TB network drive is about the worst in 25 years of assembling my own PCs.

I bought the drive as a solution to back up three PCs on a home wireless network. The one drive would always be available for back up.

The drive is bundled with Memeo back up software which needs to be installed on each PC with password required to access, even if there is only one user. The software is designed to do real time back ups to a location on the drive, updating the backup as changes occur. Disasters of course occur if you change the backup and not the original.

The program worked on one PC, the one connected by ethernet to the router. It did not work on the other two wireless connections. Contacting Memeo, as Seagate required. was useless. I had to tell someone named Jason three times to read my question. He kept answering questions I was not asking. Finally he sent back a solution completely incomprehensible.

My objective is to always have a recent image of my each harddrive backed up. I tried Win7 backup routine and discovered that Win7 Home Premium will not see networked drives. Apparently Win 7 Professional and ultimate will.

I had experience with Easus backup but needed the pay version to see a networked drive. OK I paid $39.00. But that wouldn't work either. Easeus support couldn't solve that, saying its a network or drive issue.

Finally I contacted Seagate support. Their answer was they don't support third party software. Truly the last time they will see any of my $.

One other interesting point. the drive is supposedly designed to stop spinning when there is no activity. This drive is ALWAYS spinning.

I would really like to get this all to work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex

I am having the same problem. My laptop won't recognize it after I put on a lot of data. No real support provided, only a merry go round maize of useless information.

Memo software is useless in my opinion, and it is not a system image backup software. The only support for it is from the Mozy website. It is included by Seagate on their drives but only supported by Mozy. Many here use Macrium Reflect (free) for system images or, Seagate and Western Digital offer a free scaled down version of Acronis if you have one of their hard drives. I really don't know if they can see a network drive, but may be worth a shot.

All you had to do was connect the drive up to a PC running Windows (Networking), map it to drive letter on each respective PC and back it up to it. That fact you tried to back stuff up with Memeo on a local network shows you don't know what it does.

What you need is a clear plan on what you want to do. Like a lot of people who buy computer hardware you just happen to see it at the store and bought it only vaguely aware of what you were going to do with it when you got it home.

If you truly plan on using it for backup, you're going to do some serious thinking rather looking for "There's an app for that" commercial.

This is why systems administrators get pay VbigV (not really ) money. Windows has rudimentary backup solutions and (obviously) networking. Just figure out what you want to backup, how often to backup, when you want to run backup and where you want the backup to be (where on the network is the backup drive going to be, etc.).

The drive is is sold as a network device. Not as a shared device connected to one PC. This is what I was looking for. The bundled software is supposed to allow auto back up, at least of data.

The other PCs see the drive, but the software only works on one PC.

As I mentioned Win7 Home Premium will not see networked drives. Apparently Win 7 Professional and Ultimate will.

The two responses before yours understood the issue and agreed the software does not work.

I am still looking for software that will allow PCs on a network to see and write to a standalone network device. Like a network printer.

You're suppose to use GoFlex Home, not Memeo.
