Solved can't install win7 from previously made recovery disks

I installed SP1 on a Toshiba laptop, and it caused boot up problems, that went from bad to worse-tried everything, start up repair, command prompt bootrec etc. So, I wanted to fix win 7, and of course, having no installation CD, have to use the recovery disks made 8 months ago (there are 2 of them). THe process seems to go along well "applying progress" (even if I can't understand why as the percent done increase, the time remaining increases as well). Anyway, after many hours, the screen says that it can't go any further, but to continue, press any key. I press any key and get the command prompt--X:windows\system32\ which just sits there. What is going on, what am I doing wrong? Please help, this is not my computer, which makes the fact that I crashed it even worse! Should I try and buy a win 7 installation disk, or will these home made disks work? Thanks:cry:

Did you backup the owner's files before trying the above?

To do a factory recovery in Toshiba:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Hold down the "0" key
3. Turn on the computer
4. Release the "0" key when the machine starts beeping.
5. When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.
6. Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.
7. Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.
8. Click Next to Start recovery.

Always run Factory Recovery from its partition which is a more stable method, saving the disks only as a backup. Here's how to run from partition: Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility

If this no longer works due to disks fouling it, you'll need to either order a Recovery Disk set from Toshiba Tech support, or get a much superior install using a Win7 installer for your version with the Product Key on COA sticker: Reinstalling Windows 7

There is no need to buy another copy of Win7 - you own the preinstalled Win7 for the computer's life to reinstall as many times as you want and in the way you prefer.

Here is the ISO and tools to burn to DVD or write to flash stick:

Thanks for your replies, now my answers: yes, I saved my friends data 2) I tried the toshiba factory recovery,as suggested, but that didn't work. When I turned the computer on while pressing "0", nothing happened, and I get the same message, that no bootmgr was found. 3) I might seem really dumb, but I can't figure out where to download the win 7 stuff I need to reinstall. Everything I've read seems to assume one already has it on a disk, and needs only to activite it. Don't have anything to activate; how can I get what I need? and 4) I installed sp1 'cause I'm a jerk! Thanks again for everyones help.

See post # 7 in http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/199730-image-recovery-help.html#post1680685 to get the DVD iso.

That will get Windows 7 Home Premium x64. If your friend had a different version, let me know.

Edit: Or you can just look at post #3 of this thread...Duh!?! I feel stupid now.

Why would you just ignore the steps I gave you to get done what you need?

Are you aware that the blue type are links you click on for fully illustrated tutorials and a link to the valuable Official Win7 ISO download?

I'll never understand why we can type out illustrated steps and yet some will come back and say they can't find what they need. It's baffling.

I do apologize, that's what happens when you've two or three threads on the go.

Dell it is then. :)

You should also download and install the free version of Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download. Many of the gurus use those two in tandem to help keep their systems safe.

See what drivers that optional Windows Updates delivers after several rounds, then import the rest from the Dell Support Downloads webpage for your tag number.

You're very welcome.

Pleased to hear you've got your computer running again.

+1 for Malwarebytes and Greg's advice as you'll be deluged with updates over the next couple of days.

Thanks, done download

Thanks again. I sent the message that I couldn't find the download 15 sec before I found it. A bit too stressed out. Sorry. I took me all day today to download the 3.1 GB file, first at an internet caffe, then at home with my dongle (imagine an average of 50KB/sec). I live in the backwaters of the boondocks, so everything here is much more complicated. I made the dvd, and am installing it now (I hope) because the download was done in many steps with pauses in between, hopefully, no errors occurred in the download. As you may have guessed, I'm self-taught, which means I learn by my mistakes! Fortunately, there are people who know lots more who are willing to put up with our foibles. Thanks again, and I'll let you know if things worked out, or if I have to dedicate another day to a new download. (They could have supplied us with a win 7 DVD, don't you think? Not everyone can download a humungous file like that-once we know about it-easily!):o
