I purchased this add-on card for my older AMD 2400mhz 1gb ram box. This is the computer with Win7 on the 500gb Pata IDE hard Drive. I wanted to add a 1TB Sata drive since the MB does not have sata. The card has 2 sata connections, 4 USB ports, & 1 IDE connection. It just plugs into an empty PCI slot. For some reason Win7 does not detect the card & when I try to install the drivers Win7 says cannot detect any hardware. The card has VIA VT6421A chipsets.

This card works with Vista x86 and x64. Usually you do not need to install drivers, although the drivers are on the CD or here :-
http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...VT6421-VT8237-VT8237-Raid-Download-14255.html
However Vista will not "see" the unformatted hard drive. Maybe this is your problem? Maybe you need to plug in the hard drive?

Should I format it on my XP computer with SATA connectors on the MB first, before I connect it to the card in the Win7 computer?

Hi McBlzr,

Unfortunately I am no expert on raid. I just made a couple of observations that might give you a clue on a direction. There is a guy on Vista Forums (see the link at the bottom of the Main Page) who is pretty clued up on this sort of thing, scsciraidguru, you could try going there and asking in either the General Discussion or Drivers forum

You need to configure the Drive on the Card's Interface

1. first make sure the new card is enabled in your BIOS.
2. Make sure you setup the Drive and make it active within the Card (while your computer boots up it should promt press Ctrl + <X> for XXX (the name of the add-on card you bought)
3. in there you'll need to add the HDD as Active in order the OS to see it.

that should point in the right direction.
