Random BSODs and applications crashes on a fresh Win7 install

Glad to see no errors in Memtest86+. Best wishes with the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. :)

Windows Memory Diagnostic tool without errors, although in event viewer results appear with two different codes, but the same time stamp codes are 1101 and 1201, neither of them reported errors.

Today however, I had a BSOD again, when I wasn't even using the computer. Upon reboot Win would complain about avira AV being turned off, while the process was running in the task manager and the tray icon was active.

Skype crashed as well after the reboot, I had to reboot again to get it work.

I attach the bsod report from jcgriff tool.

In the event viewer I see a following entry reported, reappearing constantly as an error:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

but I suppose it's attached in the dumps file as well.

I ran chkdisk on C: which reported 1001 code and no problems detected.

Until today's BSOD all had been running flawlessly.

Thanks for looking at the files and enjoy your weekend.

To fix your event viewer error, see Event ID 10 is logged in the Application log after you install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a) crash; likely due to an underlying device driver since your memory passed. It could also be your hard disk again, so you may want to run through the steps for doing the disk check again as you did before.

Update the following driver or re-install League of Legends.
Code:
tmpD844	fffff880`087c8000	fffff880`087cf000	Sat Jul 26 07:29:37 2008 (488b26c1)	00011908 tmpD844.tmp

Uninstall Avira using add/remove programs and then http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-registrycleaner and replace with http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials to run with Windows Firewall, at least for testing.

Thanks for answering,

I applied the fix proposed by MS for the ID 10 error, so far can't see it in the log viewer :)

I re-scanned C: for a 2nd time today with chkdisk, which found no problems, just as the 1st time.

I don't have League of Legends installed, never had actually. And the tmp file isn't on my disk (search wouldn't find it). might be a temporary internet file?

Avira uninstalled, their registry cleaner failed to launch after I unistalled Avira and rebooted the pc. It reported some problems, but after searching registry for "avira" I didn't find any entries referring to it, so I hope it's gone.

Thanks for help :)

Hi,
After a few days without a BSOD, today another one. The blue screen after windows crashed reported MEMORY_MANAGEMENT error... interesting, but I don't understand anymore. One thing for sure, I won't migrate any data I had backed up from the old one into the new system... JCgriff files attached. Thanks for looking.

PS Firefox just crashed when opening a new tab, thing that was already happening before.

Hi and thanks for both your answers.

You need to run the Avira RegistryCleaner again to be sure all the traces of Avira are removed.
Did you install MSE?

I did run the Avira RegistryCleaner after uninstalling Avira. As I mentioned previously (post n#23 on 3rd page), their utility won't even start, crashing immediately when trying to execute the file - both the zip version and exe from their site. I did install MSE as soon as was advised to do so. As I mentioned in the same post, I cannot find any residues of Avira in the registry, although I searched only by "avira" keyword. Anyway, crashes happened already before installing Avira, with MSE as well.

As writhziden mentioned, uninstall foobar2000 for testing.

The strange thing is that BSODs appear to happen while the computer is @ idle and not under stress, and often happen when I close and not launch programmes. PC crashes when I do NOTHING, like the last 2 BSODs (27.01 and 28.01) which took place when I left the computer without any programmes running, came back after 2-3 hours and found that it had rebooted with BSOD in the meantime - the latest 2 dump files are the case. I did uninstall foobar though I think the reason lies somewhere deeper.

The system isn't overclocked, in BIOS everything is set to default - voltages, RAM timings, CPU speed, NB, etc. I placed RAMs in different slots than they were originally located, no change. I attach the screenshot of the 4 cpu-z tables - computer @ idle. Do you also need the same tables under load?

Have you been checking your temperatures?
Use Core Temp , to check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages are.

I've been checking my temps since the first BSODs started. At idle CPU temp is 33 celsius (91F) and 55C (131F) under load (playing SCII, MW). The quite big difference comes probably from the fact that I use a 92mm fan on the CPU heatsink @ 1500RPM to avoid noise. I've been using Open Hardware Monitor as Core Temp was giving weird results. I only have CPU temp, as I believe my MB doesn't measure individual cores (no sensors?).

Thanks in advance for any ideas, as I don't understand anything anymore: PC won't BSOD while under load, but at idle, doing nothing, various apps crashing randomly and without any visible pattern, corrupted system file while HDD has no errors. Seems like there's always a few days' gap between BSODs occuring, then 1, 2 or 3 BSODs, again back to normal for 3-4 days, before crashing again.

HWiNFO64 Download can be run in sensor-only mode to determine if the individual cores have sensors. May be worth checking. Have you run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html to check for corrupted Windows files? You may need to run up to three times to resolve all corrupted files. If you get no integrity violations after the first run, let us know. Also, if you get errors after a fourth run, upload the CBS.log or the sfcdetails.txt file (see OPTION THREE of the SFC /SCANNOW tutorial) to your next post.

Dave76 may have further helpful steps, as well. :)

Thanks, will try the above. You noticed nothing strange then in the dumps I posted above? Actually, when writing this post right now, PC BSODed twice. Is there any point in posting the ones that happened when writing the posts?

Is there a possibility that the Windows installation DVD is corrupted and this causes problems even on a fresh install as it is my case?

Thanks for answering Dave and writhziden.

As for CPU voltages, BIOS doesn't indicate the current voltage, as it is set on "auto" and "according to CPU", so I would guess it's running @ stock voltage for FX-4100.
Idem for CPU integrated memory controller, as it's set to auto, I don't know what's the current voltage. I would need to change them manually to know the voltage - any ideas?

As for RAM voltages, I noticed that my MB was downclocking the OCZ reapers and feeding them with not enough voltage as the manufacturer site indicates that they should run @ 1,65V and the MB set it to 1,5 default. Timings too were @ 9-9-9-24, I set them to 8-8-8-24 and 1600MhZ instead of 1333. I'll see for a couple of days how it runs now and wait before testing drivers one by one (or 5 by 5 rather :).

Every once in a while the motherboard sets the voltages incorrectly for RAM. That is why we will ask users to set them to manual in the BIOS and change them according to what the RAM manufacturer requires for a specific set of RAM. Looks like you've done that step now with the aid of information and your own troubleshooting, so excellent work. Thank you for letting us know the steps you have taken, and we look forward to hearing back whether the stability increased with that applied.

Edit: One thing to note is that the RAM frequency may have been reduced to work with your CPU, so if you still have issues, that may be why. Dave is more experienced with RAM and hardware problems than I am, so he may have further information regarding your changes that I may have missed.

To read the BIOS voltages just change it to 'Manual' and you can read the numbers.

Check your post #28, the CPUZ SPD tab, this is the manufacturers specified and tested settings (they add this info to the RAM cards).

Your RAM was set at 669MHz and timings were 9-9-9-24, you just said the DRAM voltage is 1.50v.
The CPUZ SPD JEDEC#5 is 9-9-9-20 and 1.50v, this is the OCZ spec and recommendation.
The OCZ site you linked:
OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Reaper Low Voltage Dual Channel Kits
This usually means 1.50v.

Your having Memory Management crashes, now is not the time to try and overclock your RAM, this can be done after your system is stable.
AMD Integrated Memory Controllers have a known issue with running RAM above 1333MHz.
I do hope they have solved this issue with their new CPUs but, for now you need to keep the frequency and voltages at the previous settings.
We don't need to be throwing more variables into the analysis.

The performance difference between 1333MHZ and 1600MHz are only noticeable in benchmarks.

They should be set to 1333MHZ (the 667MHz setting) and first four timings at 9-9-9-20 and 1.50v, for now.

The OCZ site does mention 1600MHz (800MHz) and timings of 8-8-8-24 at 1.65v, but, the information OCZ put into the RAM cards is 1333MHz(666MHz) 9-9-9-20 at 1.50v.
Their information contradicts itself.
I have seen a lot of issues from RAM that states it is for Intel and AMD boards. They usually tend to run better on Intel.
This is one of the reasons that AMD sells their own brand of RAM now, too many compatibility issues.

All the above issues tend to make me lean towards RAM compatibility in your case.

Hi again and thanks for your replies.

I'll try to answer all of the points you raised.

1. Indeed the MB set incorrect values for the RAMs but only as refers to the timings, it set it on auto to 9-9-9-24 instead of 9-9-9-20, voltage was 1.50v.

2. I cannot read current voltages when I set to "manual" as when I choose the manual setting, the LOWEST possible voltage shows up, not the current one, I hope you get what I mean.

3. As for the voltage for reapers, it's true indeed that OCZ programmed 9-9-9-20 and 1.50v into the chips, BUT they add something to that - this comes from their official support forum:

Hello, we program this memory at a lower "safe" speed to insure that it will boot on all motherboards. "Low voltage" refers to the use of 1.65v, rather than higher voltages that other high speed memory can operate at. We clearly post the voltage as 1.65v in all specs.
Thank you

and

Hello, this kit is programmed at 1333mhz for compatibility reasons. We will be happy to assist you with settings to get you running at rated speeds. Please visit our support forums at the link below and post in the mmeory section. Thank you

and

Hello, we aplogize for the difficulties you have had. We have in the past shipped memory fully programmed at rated speeds. Since memory voltages cannot be programmed to insure that proper voltage is applied when booting, the result is that many systems simply will not boot. In the end we receive back a high percentage of "DOA" memory kits that are working perfectly. This is why we program at lower speeds for compatibility.

and a user's input:

This RAM runs at 9-9-9-20 @ 1.5v out of the box. You have to go into your BIOS and manually set it to run at 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65v.
Which basically means that setting it at 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65 does not mean overclocking according to OCZ. Their programmed setting "allows for fixing possible compatibility issues" :D Perfectly agree though that this info is at least misleading, which was also underlined many times on forums where people posted info on these RAMs.5. I chose AMD to build my PC, for $$$ reasons, so no way back, at least for now.

4. Since setting timings to 8-8-8-24 and voltage 1.65, I haven't seen any BSODs, but I'm sure the fight isn't over yet.

5. What voltage would you suggest then for the memory controller?

6. Final off-top thought: my previous rig, a good old AMD64 was a piece of cake to overclock and work on for a long time without a single BSOD for lightyears, time passed and I can only tell that instead of having less issues, which should be a logical step as tech advances, it's rather the contrary... compatibility issues??? in 2012... come on.

There are work arounds for setting AMD CPUs to handle 1600MHz.
It takes a lot of testing and setting changes.

The support information I've seen from OCZ is less than optimal.

We are trying to get the RAM in a stable condition, the noted compatibility issues, to see if anything else is causing your system to crash.
OCZ standard official setting is the best way to do this, as they have stated.

I recommend to set the RAM at 1333MHz, 9-9-9-20 RAM timings, Command Rate to 2T.
Set the DRAM voltage manually to 1.60v.
Set the CPU/NB manually to 1.250v.

You can change your RAM settings after the analysis is complete, then you will know if you are having a RAM/hardware issue or something else is causing the crashes.

These settings are conservative and should run stable.
To check them, run memtest86+ for 7 full passes with both RAM cards installed, best to run overnight.
If you get any errors you can stop the test.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

You can change your RAM settings after the analysis is complete, then you will know if you are having a RAM/hardware issue or something else is causing the crashes.

These settings are conservative and should run stable.
To check them, run memtest86+ for 7 full passes with both RAM cards installed, best to run overnight.
If you get any errors you can stop the test.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Will do tonight.
