i just have problem with my less than 1 year internal 3.5 samsung 1.5TB and im quite stressed due to it.. luckily i managed to backup most of the files..

my hardisk failed diagnosis test... my problems can be read here (just in case) :

http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-...-solve-com-surrogate-error-4.html#post1782132

so now im looking forward to buy a new hardisk... what is the best affordable ones at the moment? that is quite durable.. i know that nothing is perfect but atleast the one that comes with less complaints ... more satisfactions and etc...

im looking for a 1.5TB from known brands... and mind you that my place is very limited so dont expect me to get the latest model of hdd from certain brand cause im sure i will not find it.. pity right.. so please all i need help suggest me the long lasting best brand you can trust ... thank you

I read an exceptional article in the last few months about disk drives. It discussed longevity, failure rates, failure rate TRENDS (a drive that runs a long time tends to run a REALLY long time before failure). It also compared user drives to Enterprise-class (business) class drives. It found NO better reliablity with Enterprise class drives.

I don't have a link handy but ultimately, it's a luck of the draw what you buy.

I don't think you can get the accurate information you need. All you can get are anecdotes from whoever reads your post and the anecdotes are only one person's experience.

I'm not aware of any accepted large-scale controlled study about which drive brand has fewer complaints or higher reliability.

If I were in your shoes, I would try Western Digital and hope.

I am in the market for one myself as one of mine is getting full. I have always used Western Digital and will buy one again. All drives are so expensive at this time. I am hoping to hold off until they go down a bit. You do not have that luxury since yours died. Good luck.

I have a Caviar Blue 500 GB. The Caviar Black is a bit more expensive so I am guessing they are a bit better. How much better I am not sure.

okay thanks... i dont think i can easily find the black ones here.... cause in my place the choices are so limited... i think i can only get the blue ones..

The blue ones and the black ones are nearly the same performance. The blacks have a longer warranty and have a slightly faster random access time, but come at the expense of being noisier.

I have a pile of WD blue's at work and I like them.

With that said, I also have a pile of Samsung 2TB SpinPoint F4's and have had no problems with them at all.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but if the drive is less than one year old, why not have it replaced under warranty?

Hi there
ANY mechanical devce can (and does --although fortunately not too often) fail.

As to replacements -- do you actually NEED 2TB or so online . If you do however then :

The WD passport 1TB disks work just fine and can even withstand small things like being dropped on to a Wooden or carpeted but NOT a stone) floor.

My system is to have a load of these WD passport pocket sized 1TB USB disks which use the computers own USB power (no external power supply needed) and copy any data I actually need to have online to disks I've got connected to a server which I have access to. (A virtual server can also be used for this too).

In general HDD's don't fail often BUT THEY CAN -- so you should ALWAYS HAVE BACKUP.

Cheers
jimbo

its because in my place... the market is quite small and still developing... thus we dont really have such professional policies as in other countries e.g. send o service centre, replace with new ones (no question asked) ... especially when it comes to electronic things... and for my hardisk... it only comes with 1 month warranty which is ridiculous... but i didnt expect it would die on me so soon... thats why i thought its a wise investment at the first place... how ironic :(

hello... i just checked through websites that there are no western digital blue that carries 1.5TB .. i only find the black and the green one.... i hardly can find the black ones... but should i go with the green ones? can u help clarify are they good? or should i look for seagate now?

I have been using a Western Digital Green 1.5 TB drive for about 2 years without any problems. Of course, you can have problems with any drive--you need a bit of good luck. I have not had any problems with Samsung either.

lol yes i need that luck. i have no problem with my previous samsung and now the new one... im caught with it... i really wish there are many choices available here for me :sigh: what do u think about Seagate?

I have not had any problems with Seagate. Overall, if you searched the Internet, you might find more complaints about Seagate than other brands because some of their models from a few years back seemed to have problems. The last Seagate I bought was around 2005 or so.

You can drive yourself crazy trying to make a choice--so I'd probably make my choice based on price, since you can't look up failure rates in a book of some kind.

lol thats true but unfortunately there are few choices available at my place... and thus we only have like hitachi, seagate, WD and Samsung ... but its not the latest model... so its quite hard to cross by the ones uve recommended.. some friends suggest me to go with Hitachi .. any complains u have heard?

Always, always, always backup. No hard drive is a guarantee. Keep a second copy elsewhere, offsite perferably. It's the only failsafe.
