Yesterday, my ethernet cable got pulled out of my laptop and I couldn't connect to the internet anymore. But on my desktop, it works perfectly fine. (I don't use wifi, if that information is also needed) I've researched several threads with similar situations, and I've tried different methods to solve the problem. There were no exclamation points next to the nic cards. I reinstalled the nic cards, I tried the winsock reset, and I did a system restore, but I'm having no luck. I also didn't make any recent changes with my anti virus software and my nic drivers look up to date. I'll greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for your time. Here's my ipconfig/ all

Did you try this?:

Copy and paste these lines in Notepad:

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

Thank you for responding sibbil. I followed your instructions and the laptop rebooted, but I'm still getting the message that I have no network access.

What do you connect to? A router and separate modem, or a combo modem/router? And is your other machine the only other device connected?

I connect to a router and a separate modem. My router is a voip, so my phone is also connected.

So a quick and easy thing you can try first:

1 - Power everything down.
2 - Start the modem and wait until all the LED's reflect that it's truly all the way up.
3 - Start the router and wait until all the LED's reflect that it's truly all the way up.
4 - Go ahead and start the rest of your devices.

I tried it twice, and there's still no progress.

Its lit. Also a tiny orange light is blinking. Is that bad?

Green solid on, orange blinking is ok. Can you do the ipconfig from the working machine?

One more thing, even though the little LED's are appropriately lit, because you mention that the cable got "pulled" from the machine, I'd like you to try using the cable from the working machine to see if it can connect...

Yeah, I switched the cables but there was still no connection. The cable that originally connected to my laptop also works fine with my desktop.

Here's my ip config of my desktop.

Code:

The ipaddress there looks good (but I guess you knew that).

Go to Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Network and Sharing Center and click on "Change Adapter Settings". Right click on "Local Area Connection" and select properties. Left click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click properties. Are the two radio buttons "Obtain ... automatically" selected? If not, select them and click okay.

Now do the same for the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" item. Make sure both are set to auto.

tis is APIPA (automatic private IP addressing) this what you will get if you set automatic IP but there is problem with DHCP
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.194.53(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0

because
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
your ip is set to automatic.. but there is problem with DHCP.

try to set it manually to your network ip that is not used
in your case judging by the desktop config
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.x <in place of x enter number from 1 to 254 i recommend 102 or so (because i think 1 is taken by your router 4 is your dekstop)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 208.67.220.220
208.67.222.222

you can do that from command line
for ip address (you may need to run cmd in as administrator right click and select run as administrator)
Code:
netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Local Area Connection" static 192.168.254.102 255.255.255.0 192.168.254.1
for dns
Code:
netsh interface ip set dns name="Local Area Connection" static 208.67.220.220
when you do this are you able to connect to internet?

usually this line in ipconfig says that its set to automatic.
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

it doesnt hurt to double check tought..
but i bet its set to auto

@sybill Both IPvs were set to auto when I checked.
@vaidas I followed your instructions, and my laptop started to look for a network, but it ended up with same no network access message. I tried putting a couple different values, but my laptop didn't respond to the changes.

Okay. Here's the message I received when I pasted your codes.
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Local Area Connection

strange now your link is down.. Media disconnected
please check in Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" properties. does it says manual and configuration is there?
do your network uses any domain or some other things? who configures your router? is your DHCP service from router?

reenable automatic ip as per sybbil suggestion does it change anything?

try to reenable network adapter
in your network and sharing center click Change adapter settings
on local area network right click select disable and then again enable.

After I reenabled the auto ip, my ipconfig reverted back to same values of the ipconfig I first posted in the first page. I tried disabling and enabling the nics but nothing happened. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling them, but again, there was still no connection.
do your network uses any domain or some other things? who configures your router? is your DHCP service from router?
I don't really understand the first question. My friend configured my router. I don't know how to answer the last question either. Where do I find that out?

how many pcs are on your network just two?

try manual configuration again (command line or tcp/ip properities)
set your ip address, mask, geteway and dns manually.
for ip address try 192.168.254.5 192.168.254.6 etc
every time after applying settings
and closing configuration
run ipconfig and look if
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected <this is bad
there should be
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.x <number that you entered

can you try any other network to connect?
can you ping localhost
can you ping router or other pc?
