Disabling "X.exe has stopped responding" dialog

As the title says my problem is the little dialog window that comes with Windows 7 that pops up whenever a program hangs/crashes etc. Now normally this isn't a huge problem, sure it's not intuitive and usually next to useless, but I've got a couple of applications that will hang when they run. There's nothing wrong with them (aside from some possible coding issues) so that's not my problem. The issue is Windows 7 and it's little dialog box. These applications continue running regardless of the fact that they lock up for a second but that terrible box locks out part of the process which in turn means the application fails to complete its task and returns and a bunch of errors because of it.

So the question is, is there any way to disable Windows from killing the process/showing that dialog box? I've tried turning off error reporting and all that does is remove the 1-2 seconds of "checking for a solution" and goes straight to the close application option.

We'll need more info on what apps these are and how they are crashing.
And, then you'll probably need someone to code up a solution for you.

The apps are just some custom files to automate processes like patching and checking for errors, but like I said they're not the problem. When I say lock up I don't mean it actually crashes, there's no error log or anything of the sort, the GUI just doesn't respond for a second or two while it keeps running in the background. In that second where there's no response though Windows tries to close it, it does this with a ton of games too especially ones where it'll show a static image for ~ten seconds.

Like I said the problem isn't applications it's purely a Windows 7 thing especially because I've been able to run every one of the programs without a hitch in XP as it doesn't have the immediate "You must close now!" unless I try to close the program myself.

I'd suggest using Process Monitor to track the issues then.

Introduction

Process Monitor is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity. It combines the features of two legacy Sysinternals utilities, Filemon and Regmon, and adds an extensive list of enhancements including rich and non-destructive filtering, comprehensive event properties such session IDs and user names, reliable process information, full thread stacks with integrated symbol support for each operation, simultaneous logging to a file, and much more. Its uniquely powerful features will make Process Monitor a core utility in your system troubleshooting and malware hunting toolkit.

Overview of Process Monitor Capabilities

Process Monitor includes powerful monitoring and filtering capabilities, including:

  • More data captured for operation input and output parameters
  • Non-destructive filters allow you to set filters without losing data
  • Capture of thread stacks for each operation make it possible in many cases to identify the root cause of an operation
  • Reliable capture of process details, including image path, command line, user and session ID
  • Configurable and moveable columns for any event property
  • Filters can be set for any data field, including fields not configured as columns
  • Advanced logging architecture scales to tens of millions of captured events and gigabytes of log data
  • Process tree tool shows relationship of all processes referenced in a trace
  • Native log format preserves all data for loading in a different Process Monitor instance
  • Process tooltip for easy viewing of process image information
  • Detail tooltip allows convenient access to formatted data that doesn't fit in the column
  • Cancellable search
  • Boot time logging of all operations
The best way to become familiar with Process Monitor's features is to read through the help file and then visit each of its menu items and options on a live system.

Erm.... As I've been trying to say I don't have any issue with the applications even if this one specific app. can be fixed that's just putting a bandaid on my overall problem, that being Windows 7. What I'm looking for, and hoping exists, is for a way to simply disable the popup all together similar to how XP ran with Windows only trying to terminate the program if I've continued to interact with it or personally try to close it.

Again it's not an isolated issue Windows will give me the "checking for a solution" on any program that's GUI that isn't completely apparent that it's active, now usually it's only a minor inconvenience (in the case of games the window will go away and they'll resume like nothing's happened) but it's still something I'd like to be rid of. Through some searching I've come across some registry edits to increase the timeout before the window occurs but if at all possible I'd like a more global solution, again removing it all together, as the time needed could vary and I don't have much experience with editing the registry so it's not something I'm all that comfortable with.

I hope I'm not coming across as rude as that's not my intention and I sincerely appreciate you trying to help but please understand that I don't wish to try to get the root of why the applications do what they do (I can think of at least four other programs that cause this problem off the top of my head) I just want to get Windows off my back.

Alright so I've just decided to go with changing the timeout, turning off WER in the registry and disabling the UI makes the dialog go away but it still locks out part of the app, the only problem is I can't seem to find any of the values.

Any ideas where the HungAppTimeout and the like are? I've checked the usual places but they're nowhere to be found.
