What version of Windows 7 are you running?

I see in many people's descriptions that they are running Windows 7 Ultimate, even the occasional one that sounds awfully like he/she barely has a clue about his system, much less how 7 Ultimate would be beneficial to him/her.

I don't know about you, but to me Ultimate is insanely expensive (unless you use a workaround) and really isn't that much of a bonus over Home Premium. I would see no need for anything better than HP even if all versions were the same price.

Which versions do you use, and why? And was the price worth it?

I'm running ultimate. Don't use bitlocker, applocker, but heavy reliance on other features.

Technet subscription actually comes in handy for something

I have Ultimate, but the "only" reason is because I attended the Microsoft Launch Event called "The New Efficiency" for Windows 7 when it was released and they gave away copies of Windows 7 Ultimate to each attendee of this event.

Had I not been given a free copy of Ultimate, I would have not purchased anything other than Windows 7 Professional myself. I would have gone this route for XP Mode and RDP ability.

I use Professional at work primarily because it supports group policy and domain membership. All of my systems at home run Windows 7 Ultimate, and I use this version also because of group policy (local) and for occasional domain testing and BitLocker to a degree, and I do enjoy the Aero over RDP feature of Ultimate. As for cost, I get a free volume license from work, so the price is definitely worth it

I don't think you are supposed to take your corporate keys home for your own personal use.

I have my own license key good for 5 PC's that they gave to me specifically for work-at-home testing. But thanks for your concern

Your welcome. I think you will find that many who have used software from work at home are doing so in a non-legal fashion. I don't believe that Volume Licensing covers you at all for this. That's more an offshoot of Technet or MSDN for the employee. But that's neither here nor there, if your company handed you licenses and said you could use them, it's not really your issue.

I use Windows 7 Professional. I bough it for Windows XP Mode (which turned out to be terrible. I have a dedicated XP box for running old stuff now). Then, I found out about group policy and i could never go back to Home Premium (except that all of my other pcs run Home or XP Home Edition etc)

^ Windude99: What was it about XP Mode that you found horrible? As a virtualized environment, I think it's great. Perhaps you were trying to run games or connect to external hardware or something.

I haven't found much need for any group policy stuff at home, but I use it quite a bit at work.

Home Premium here; got Pro for the XP mode until I found out the graphics drivers sucked ass (S3 Trio, LOL). Sigh.

I've been very satisfied w. Home Premium on the HP laptop I purchased about a year ago. It's been extremely stable since I dumped the preloaded bloatware. This coming from a Linux user.

Pro 32-bit. The price was right!
I tried XP Mode for some older software but it still didn't work, so that's why I dual-boot to XP Home SP3.
