Solved Crashes while playing Witcher 2 and other explorer.exe crashes.

HI there i have noticed recently that i have been getting odd explorer.exe restarts whenever i go to Control Panel-System & Security-Windows Update. After clicking windows update explorer will say it needs to restart and go ahead and restart itself. The problem is that it is completely random when it happens. I can't reproduce it 100% of the time. I thought it might be a memory problem but i ran memtest for 13 hours and no errors came up. I ran a chkdsk and sfc /scannow and both also returned no errors. I have disabled all non-microsoft shell extentions as well and that still hasn't stopped the issue. It doesn't bluescreen or even cause any other issues from what i can tell and i can continue using everything afterwards just fine and even go into the Windows Update without it crashing. It only seems to get messed up after a reboot. I also haven't been able to install any Windows SDK to check the dmp file myself.

Now a new problem i have been having is with the Witcher 2. During cutscenes the computer will lock up and my monitor will return "No Display" but my computer will remain on. I can't ctrl+alt+del or do anything. I thought it might be my temps but my gpu was registering 71c and my cpu was registering 42c. I have to hard reset everytime.

I can't really tell if they are related or not but the crash from the witcher doesn't even create an event other than me hard resetting.

- an OEM or full retail version? Not sure. Came from Cyberpower PC Builders. The Windows 7 disc they gave me Sats for distribution only with a New Cyberpower PC

Graphics & Troubleshooting

Your Nvidia driver was pointed. To make a clean install of the driver and avoid left-over files proceed to the steps below. If you're having any questions regarding it just ask.

i) Make your way to Nvidia Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers
ii) Uninstall the Graphic driver you currently have and all its extensions (do not reboot yet)
iii) Download Driver Sweeper
iv) Get to safe mode (without network) and search for Driver Sweeper in your rb:
v) Select all the Nvidia components and analyse them
vi) Clean them, head into Windows without internet and download the driver

Direct-X

There's also some pointers to your Direct-X files. Option one is that it could be the Direct-X files. Option two is that it could be a part of the Windows system files, as Direct-X is a part of that. To be one the safe side, update your Direct-X files.

Other tips and tricks

• Stop any type of overclocking.
• Blow the Graphic Card fans.
• Make sure that no hidden overclocking feature is on.
• Download Speccy and make sure that temperatures are stable.
• Make sure that the games you're playing has the latest updates and look for Q&A's, fixes and compatibilities.

Wow that was amazingly quick. I went ahead and uninstalled the graphics drivers and did a driver sweep. There were 3 different NVIDIA things to choose from though so i only picked Display. The other 2 were chipset and physx and i wasn't sure what to do with them. I downloaded the Gigabit drivers and that seemed to be ok.

When i went to install the DirectX it said it was already up to date or that there was a newer version available. I wasn't sure if you meant to completely wipe directx and install again or not but the installer itself said it was current.

I'm going to try and play witcher again and see if i crash at the same spot. If i do i will attach another file like the one in the previous post.


Update: Witcher crashed in exactly the same spot in exactly the same way but this time i don't think it created a dmp file as there is still only 1 in the folder. Went ahead and did the 2 reports anyway just in case im missing something.

The game crashing is annoying but what im more concerned about is the explorer.exe crashes that happen completely randomly when i click windows update. They never create a minidump either because it doesn't crash the comp or bluescreen it but so far i haven't been able to replicate it since around noon.

If you're experiencing a BSODs, just wrap the dump and upload it.
In case it won't generate a dump, make sure you've got these settings figured.

Your Minidump content should be in the folder at the path C:\Windows\Minidump. If there's no files inside, make sure minidumps are enabled by -

Go to Start, then Run, then type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on the Startup and Recovery button
Ensure that "Automatically restart" is unchecked
Under the Write Debugging Information header select "Small memory dump (64 kB)" in the dropdown box
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as "%systemroot%\Minidump" (without the quotes)
Click OK twice to exit the dialogs, then reboot for the changes to take effect.

Next time you'd experience a BSOD, a dump is supposed to be generated. When it's generated, wrap it up in a zip and upload it.

I went ahead and tried to play again and it still crashes at the same spot. The problem is that that crash does not create a bluescreen or even an event in event viewer and therefore nothing in the dmp folder other then the one that is in there from earlier. The screen goes completely black and says "No DVI Input". The computer remains on but i can't interact with anything. My temps remained the same when i ran in windowed mode to check so it doesn't seem like an overheating issue.

I will attach the only dmp in there that was written when the witcher first started crashing along with the tool file and a perf.

Do you have some Graphic Card you can borrow from a friend, family or other relatives? It sounds very related to the card. For the time being, pull out the card, start the PC - let the error/beep/bugchecks come, turn off the PC. Put in the Graphic Card and see if things work.

If it's late at your place maybe you should get some rest. You've done a tremendous job, and maybe you'll need to call it a day, stress and frustration is not cool.

Yea have been dealing with this since 6am so about 12 hours i guess. Im east coast U.S. Unfortunately i don't have any card to use otherwise but ill go ahead and pull it out and turn the comp on. Then ill try to reseat it and make sure everything is alright. I think im going to stop for a little bit and have a beer and relax.

Thank you so much for all the help. If the problem continues maybe i can just ask for a replacement card or something since im sure it is still under warranty. Still a bummer that this is the only game that there is a problem with. Tis computer came shipped with bad ram that i had to have replaced but since the replacement the only other problem i have had were with conflicting Anti-Virus (avast and MSE). Maybe when they made the computer with the bad ram files were corrupted during driver installation or even Windows installation but even thinking about doing a reformat or a repair install is giving me a headache.

Maybe tomorrow ill try again and if i get lucky and get a dmp i will update this thread.

Malware

I'm actually starting to suspect Malware or worms of some kind.
Please do a full scan with Malwarebytes and uninstall it afterwards if you so desire.

Just ran a scan. It returned PUP.BundleInstaller.IQ

Files Detected: 1
C:\Users\Jose\Downloads\coretemp_1236.exe (PUP.BundleInstaller.IQ) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Not sure if that could have caused the other problems though but since the explorer crashes are so random maybe it was?

Just had another explorer.exe restart. Ran a full malwarebytes virus scan in safe mode and it returned nothing. Checked in the minidump file and there was nothing new there. Only the same dmp from yesterday which when i looked in my logs was created because the computer start BUGCheck while it was stuck at that black screen i suppose.

Have you tried a vanilla install of Windows? It basically means that you install Windows, and nothing else. No software, no drivers, nothing. Just plain Windows.

If you desire to try it, remember to safe your files somewhere else.

So should i just do a Full install of windows from the CD they gave me or a repair install. Im concerned about doing fresh installs because im not sure how to install bios drivers and things like that. I have read a couple of guides and even made a Windows repair USB installer but doing it is kind of scary.

It only seems to crash when i do Start->Control Panel->System & Security-> Windows Update. It will show my mouse with the spinning icon next to it for about half a second then just restart itself which makes me feel like it could be corrupted but again i have no other proof of that.

Just got a back to back explorer restart. I went to windows update again and it gave me the spinning icon then restarted then restarted itself during its first attempt of the restart. This is super weird.

EDIT: Did the clean boots and the error still occurs even though it was after 2 reboots with no errors. Definitely feels random but im sure it isn't the memory since i did the 7 hours memtest on one stick and a 6 hour on the other stick with no errors returned. Not really sure what can be causing it because it only happens when going into windows update. Still worried about doing a fresh install of windows but it really is looking like i have to

How does your computer act in Safe Mode?
(to enter safe mode, try F5, F12, F2, Delete, Tab at boot. Or go to Start > type msconfig > Go to Boot tab, and enable Safe Mode.)

The control panel menus seemed fine during safe mode. Went ahead and booted up in normal mode and actually had it crash while pressing the back button from the personalization menu. The crashes mainly seem to happen if i go to the control panel directly after a reboot. Only once has it crashed while just looking through folders with explorer. Nothing else really seems to crash it and once it restarts explorer the first time it doesn't seem to have any problems.
