Gadgets not Displaying Correctly in Windows 7 - Fix

How to Fix Gadgets not Displaying Correctly in Windows 7

   Information
If you have gadgets that are displaying on your Windows 7 desktop improperly as black, white, blank, or just messed up, then this will show you how to fix them.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do this tutorial.

   Note
If you have a 3rd party firewall program installed, then also check to make sure that the gadgets are allowed in the firewall and are not being blocked in that program's exception settings.

EXAMPLE: Gadgets not displaying correctly
Gadget-1.jpgGadget-2.jpg

OPTION ONE

Automatically Using a BAT File Download

NOTE: This does the same thing as in OPTION TWO below, but automatically. 1. Click on the Download button below to download the file below. Reset_Gadgets.bat

Download

2. Click on Save (if prompted), and save the .bat file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .bat file and click on Run as administrator.

4. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.

5. You will see a command prompt flash open and close as the .bat file runs.

6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

7. Check to see if the gadgets on your desktop are displaying correctly now. If not, then try uninstalling and reinstalling any gadgets that are still not displaying properly, or do a System Restore using a restore point dated before the problem.

OPTION TWO

Manually in an Elevated Command Prompt

NOTE: This does the same thing as in OPTION ONE above, but manually. 1. Open an elevated command prompt (right click - Run as administrator)

2. In the elevated command prompt, copy and paste each command below and press Enter one t a time. After each time your press Enter, you will need to click on OK before doing the next command.
Code:
[LIST]
[*]taskkill /im sidebar.exe /f
[*]regsvr32 msxml3.dll
[*]regsvr32 scrrun.dll
[*]regsvr32 jscript.dll
[*]regsvr32 atl.dll
[*]Regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\sbdrop.dll"
[*]Regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\wlsrvc.dll"
[*]reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones" /f
[*]"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe"
[/LIST]
3. Restart the computer to apply.

4. Check to see if the gadgets on your desktop are displaying correctly now. If not, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the still bad gadget, or do a System Restore using a restore point dated before the problem.
That's it,
Shawn

Hello Crazybear,

Did you ever try temporarily uinstall Norton, and any other 3rd party firewall or AV program, completely to see if it was a cause of this for you?

Both Methods Didn't Work! :(

Hi Brink! I was just reading through all the advice you gave everyone! Really great job! :) However, both methods (The .bat automatic method while running it as an administrator, and the manual method while running command prompt as administrator) didn't work. I also tried creating another administrator account to see if it was just my own account that was faulty, however, the gadgets on the other account also had the same error. I attached a screenshot as to what my gadgets look like.

Thank you!

Edit: Also I disabled my AVG firewall before doing both methods. And to note, I restarted my computer after both attempts.

Hello DopeTurtle, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a test, completely uninstall AVG Firewall, and run the .bat again to see if they work afterwards. If they do, then you'll need to make sure that the gadgets are set to be allowed through the AVG firewall and not being blocked in that program's exception settings.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

gadgets dont display

The suggestion to restore the computer to an earlier time does not apply since my ACER and also one purchased by my friend on the same day ... exact same model, would not display gadgets from day one. I have tried running the batch file but to no avail. I have changed from the default trial period anti virus program and I am now running microsoft essentials. I have not tried adding gadgets since changing the AV program, so I will give that a try.

None of the above solutions worked for me. However running SFC /scannow in command prompt worked as a charm.

How to check?

I'm using Eset 6 and its firewall is off. I'm using Windows Firewall. There are no other applications for firewall.

If you have a restore point dated before this happened, you could do a system restore to hopefully fix it.

Otherwise, you may need to either reinstall or do a repair install. :(

Restore not possible

Have this problem from a long time. Didn't recognize it to be a problem. So, restore not possible.
And if i go for a repair install will all my applications be retained including documents where saved files of games and some applications get stored.?

Your programs and user folders will not be affected by a repair install.

However, I would always recommend to back up anything that you do not want to lose first just to be safe. In this case, creating a system image first would be ideal to be able to do a system image recovery with it if needed.
