will new cpu work with current mtherboard

Combining AM3 processor with AM3 mainboard with DDR2 will not boost preformance much, but if you use AM3 processor with AM3 mainbord with DDR3, it wil boost your preformance at least twice...
So you don't understand all....;)
i think ill have enough power for what i do but im not paying that much £££££ on ram when i just bought some ,,, boost performance at least twice .if thats true id look to upgrade in future but id do that regardless of this anyway..
and considering my 1.8 ghz processer can run gta4 on highesh setting 25 fps itd still be a huge performance with that quadf 3.2 ghz cpu

i never claim to know it all

but i understood what the guy was putting accross

i have to disagree with you there Sassa,

You say twice which would mean an 100% increase in speed.

The real world figures don't even come close to that.

The same processor on an AM3 board with DDR3 will have a max boost of around 5% to 7% compared to an AM2+ board with DDR2.

There are several tests on internet that support that statement.

The first CPu that really make good use of DDR3 is the Intel i7 and even then we are talking about a maximum theoretical increase of 10% to 15%, compared with Quadcores + DDR2.

Not worth the money I would say.

One thing Gilly,

don't forget to invest in better cooling.

the quad will produce a lot more heat.

So not only a good CPU cooler, but also extra fans to get the heat out of your box fast.

In my faculty laboratory results were much different...

I've been a computer fanatic since the 386sx days.

In the the whole history of computing there has never been an 100% increase in CPU performance only by changing a mainboard and ram with the same CPU on board.
Not even 20%

I see a multitude of test done all over the internet, and they are all pretty close together in their conclusions, so I'll put my money on those fact.

Maybe some mistakes were made in those lab tests you speak about.

Just think about it for a while.

And read something about the "Moore's law", it says something of growth in capacity and his theory has been right on the mark for 25 years.

Greetz my friend. don't take it personal, just stating the facts. ;)

It's true that CPU preformace increases 20%, but when you add to that over 60% RAM boost + L3 cach usage + higher HyperTransport; it's twice better global preformance than when you use DDR2 RAM and AM2+ mainboard

That's where you go wrong.

You can not add up results together like that.

The lowest value (20%) is the maximum theoretical gain.

No matter how fast the ram is, if the CPU can deliver the data only 20% faster, then that is the real increase you will have.

And the statement of 60% increase with DDR3 is just not true. Not even close to the truth.

But I will make a comparison.

I have a gigabit network, 1000mbit (125mb/s) that's 10 times faster than a 100mbit network (12,5mb/s).

But my harddisk can deliver the data with a maximum of 70mb/s

The conversion to send it over UTP takes off some of the speed.

The resulting maximum speed I can get over the gigabit net is 50mb/s

12,5mb/s to 50mb/s = only 4 times faster, not 10 times.

So the same applies here.

The chain is as strong as it's weakest link.

And even this is all theoretical, because with smaller files I only reach 20mb/s.

But we are going too much OT, Gilly just wanted to know if the CPU will run on the Acer mainboard.

And I am going to bed. :D

Good night,

Greetz

Nope, the guy is an idiot.

Just go a bit back to my post about specifics for am2, am2+ and am3.

Am2+ = 940 socket (940 holes) and can receive a AM3(938 pins) processor.

The other way around is not possible. Am2+ processors do not fit on an AM3 mainboard.

The question if your mainboard will work with the AM3 CPU, only depends on if the BIOS supports it or not.

You need to get a smarter guy on the phone at Acer's.

his excuse was he uses intel:huh:

ill ring them back tomorrow and hopefully get a more knowledgable guy

...so it would fit the am3 cpu on a 940 socket . aslong as bios supports it

the guy at acer said hes never heard of socket 940

ive not either but dont get paid to give advise ..pshhhhhh
