Solved GFX Issue with glitch when video playback during video gaming

I have a question for the gurus here.

I notice with video playback that it gets a little choppy, like a line that forms across the middle of the screen and breaks up the video. It seems to only happen in 'higher intensity' video playback, but I don't know that for sure. I'm fairly certain that I have the most updated drivers from ATI, but will check for sure when I get home. What else could this be? Do I just need more power? The gfx card is a few years old now. Originally I thought it was my monitor, but I have since replaced it and the problem persists.

seems like it has been doing this since day one. but ill give that a try.

i have a fan controller that has temp monitoring and it hasn't passed the "red" zone ever

First of all I would check your driver's first to see if you have the latest one. Is it any program you use or just the one?

I would also get the driver from Dell for your monitor. Another thing to try, try a different monitor cable.

it has happened across two monitors (a samsung, and now my dell) and various cables, and happens across a few different games. not usually during game play, but during the video cut scenes

i'll check on the drivers and report back

Hello Dirtyelf.

Your videos are suffering from something called screen tearing.

May I know which media player you use to play your vids and also tell me if you have aero theme enabled or not?

i do have aero theme enabled, and the tearing happens during cut scenes from video games such as star craft 2 or the intro movie of sim city, and when i play videos i usually use WMP

I have driver version 9.12.0.0, which i think is the most updated version.

AMD Catalyst

and my monitor driver is up to date


possibly related to this? (currently enabled)


Enabling ITC Processing for DTVs
ITC processing is a feature that enables display processors to use the appropriate pixel data processing algorithms based on specific content type to ensure video quality.

With ITC processing, the graphics driver enables the display to use its own video quality processing algorithms for movies played in full-screen mode on HDMI™ displays.

Note: This feature is available only for DTVs connected with HDMI cables and may not be available for all systems.
From the Graphics Settings tree, expand DTV.
Click Attributes.
Select or clear Enable ITC Processing as appropriate.
Select—Enables ITC processing for HDMI displays that are capable of the feature. When movies are played in full-screen mode, the display’s processors can be used to ensure video quality.
Clear—Disables ITC processing. Video quality is ensured by the graphics driver for all types of conte

Try switching on and off ITC and see if it helps. Anyway, did you install any codec pack? Also try Media Player Classic - Home Cinema to play your videos.

i dont notice it as much during video playback in WMP, although i think it does sometimes.. it is most prevalent in SC2 during the campaign cut scenes

i'll try without ITC and see if anything changes

Make sure you uninstall any codec pack you installed and check back your cutscenes.

Is this only happening in FULL SCREEN mode?

Been tested in Windowed mode in that case?

V-sync is suspect, isn't likely used in Windowed mode...

huh, in windowed (fullscreeen) mode it did not tear! is the solution to just always play in windowed mode if possible?

Turn off V-Sync within the game and see if it goes away, I play all games in Windowed mode if possible, most of my late releases have a max screen space, but windowed mode available.

I prefer to be able to switch out to other things easily.

I have two monitors.... I keep game on one and surfing on the other, annoyed when games only play in full screen.

What V-sync does is force the game to run at the frame rate native to the monitor, likely 60 FPS, and probably what is happening is your video card can't handle that much constantly at the game settings you are using...

Without V-Sync on your video card will do it's highest FPS it can, in my case, I use fraps to monitor frame rates, it's free for that purpose, I paid for it so I could record with full sound, any way with V-Sync off some games like Painkiller (my favorite FPS) made several years ago, I am seeing 250+ FPS, which is of course overkill and raises the video card temp way up, so in that case V-Sync is desirable.

If the monitor communication speed (response time) was higher than 8ms, I suppose that too would wreck havoc on gaming, just something else to consider.

Yup you should turn V-Sync on, that should cure tearing.

AH, there u go, it was opposite for that game, ugh, probably will run that game at best FPS in your range, which is fine, would have gotten there sooner, but on my end sevenforums was suddenly unreachable.

If you spend a lot more you can get a native 120Mhz monitor.
