I am buying a new computer in a couple of weeks and was planning on having 7 installed on it. I was thinking that 8 would be like Vista, but whivh is the better and what would you advise, 8 because it is the future or 7 because it is better.

8 is like 7 with a couple tweaks and a touchscreen-oriented interface, so you aren't losing anything.
It's not even like Vista that was an open beta, it's just a reskin.
Unless you like 8's looks anyway.

So you would advise 8 as it is not another Vista.

Guy at Staples said a new generation of computers should be coming out shortly for back to school sales. I'd expect a radical change from what is currently offered, or wait until Christmas sales.

He was likely talking of Haswell chips from Intel. For laptops they are going to be a godsend (although calling it "radical" would be a bit excessive imho). So yeah, look for Haswell chips if you are buying a lappy.
If not, then it's less important.

I've got Win 7 on my laptop, but as soon as I get my next backup done, I'm gonna install a 2nd hard drive in this thing then install Win 8 Pro on it.

I have an ASUS TF-700T tablet, so Splashtop Streamer should work on the Metro Interface of Windows 8 from my tablet.

My external ASUS Blu-Ray burner with Cyberlink software won't work in Windows 7, and people on Amazon are complaining that ASUS Tech Support told them to use Windows 8 with it.

I won't be happy with Win 8 without that Classic Shell program that makes the desktop resemble Win 7 with a Start Button and Programs menu.

Some websites are becoming touch interactive, but you wouldn't know it with just a mouse.

Some experts have predicted that Windows 8 will be like Vista. But expert predictions have turned out wrong on numerous occasions. Only time will tell.

Windows 8 has numerous advantages over Windows 7, far too many to list. The major objections to Windows 8 seem to be the user interface. But many people like it. Anyone saying that Windows 7 is better than Windows 8 is only expressing an opinion. There are many who would disagree. There is no single right answer for everybody.

If you don't have a touchscreen, stay away from Windows 8. It is very cumbersome to operate with the mouse and keyboard. I have /8 installed but I only fire it up once per month to do the updates - else I use Windows 7. /8 also does not seem to be as stable as /7.

New PC? What type, Desktop, Laptop, Tablet? Personally I'm not fussy for 8 on my desktop PC's. I find the new UI clunky to use with a keyboard and mouse so I'm running 7 on those. I have 8 on my laptop and find the user experience more pleasurable using the touch pad. I think it would rock on a tablet or other portable device with a full touch screen. You may want to check out your local computer retailer and play around with a display model or two to see if you might like Windows 8.

Hi there
This question is a bit like "What's better - an Audi or BMW". If you don't have a HUGE amount of applications to run I would tend to go with W8 as it is a newer OS and it actually performs quite well. If you wait two or 3 weeks when Ms release the 8.1 preview then the question might be more easily answered as there are apparently a few changes in W8 to correct a lot of the initial complaints from Desktop users.

W7 is fine still also -- and probably a better choice if you use a computer at work and want it to have the same OS - or if you have some older legacy hardware.

On a W7 Forum you'll probably get more people telling you to use W7 while on W8 the advice might be the Other way around.

I think you'll have to make your own judgement call on this one -- although sourcing copies of W7 might be getting more difficult as time goes on.

Cheers
jimbo
