I've had this disk for probably 3 years or so - pretty sure it came with my custom built PC (from Silent PC). Its worked flawlessly. Now last night my Windows went through an automatic update (as they do) and suddenly I'm getting this 7601 Build Windows not Genuine.

I've got the disk and the code right here, but when I put the disk in it fails as it says the disk is older than the version currently on the computer.

I've got another windows 7 disk that I think came with a dell machine, but haven't tried to use that - I figure it will fail.

I've copied and pasted this MGADiag info below - any ideas? Or whats a good number to call MSoft to resolve?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here you go. And as a Brit of Irish descent, now living in Texas (but having spent most of my university life sharing a flat with a bunch of rowdy Welshmen) it made me happy to see that Welsh flag. And if you're anything like my old flatmates, probably in the pub, should really be most definitely. Cheers mate!

Blimey it never ends.... is there a guide as to how to read these MGAD outputs? I navigated over with the IE. Just to be clear hopefully THIS is the final go around on this nonsense. Thank you again for all the help and getting me back to fully functioning in record time. Great stuff.

There is no official guide to how to read the reports - my knowledge is based on having read upwards of 25000 of them, and fixing around 5000 machines.
You're lucky - you had a fairly standard error :) The record thread-length for a successful fix is well over 100 posts.

Been messing with this for 2 days now!!
Had this issue with a Dell machine with factory installed Win 7 Pro. Windows would not show activation status, and when I tried to run slui.exe it came up with an error 0x80070570. Microsoft Security Essentials popped up as well saying this was not a genuine installation. Following the link from MSE pulled up a website to validate Windows but it just clocked and clocked. Someone said to rename tokens.dat located here: %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform but when I tried to get there it said it was corrupted. Ran sfc.exe scannow 10 times, ran chkdsk /r and no luck.

Finally I was ready to rebuild the machine but tried one last thing. I thought I might be able to copy the Microsoft folder from another machine from here: %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft and then it would no longer be corrupted. While getting ready to do this I wanted to make a copy of the one already on the machine but it wouldn't let me. So just to see what would happen, I removed the read only and renamed the %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming to %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming2 and then ran slui.exe and voila! It activated! I checked and a new roaming folder had been created so no more corruption!

If this doesn't work, you can just rename the new Roaming folder to something else and rename the Roaming2 one back to Roaming and no harm done. But this worked for me and saved my client an onsite visit to rebuild his machine!

Reboot and Postback with a new MGADiag report

I just wanted to say a big "Thank You" :D
I dowloaded a very large Windows Update a couple of days ago, and since then, I had the 'Windows version not genuine' blurb message on my desktop (worrying as Windows was added to the laptop by Acer from new)

I Googled and thankfully found this thread, which solved the problem immediately (I didn't have to input the key either)

Best wishes
Tara

Ughggh. Sorry. Me again. Back to getting the same message. I've stopped the service. It confirms as stopping.

I'm running as an Administrator.

I put in this string at the C:\Users\Name> prompt: CD%windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

I did this with the capitalization as above and also as all lower case. For some reason now I'm getting this report back
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

My machine recently updated itself last night. Have they now changed where this thing is and how its named ie do I now need a different string to rebuild the store? Can you suggest what the right syntax now is?
Thanks so much!

You haven't entered the whole command that's why :D

Go back and start again, then copy / paste the whole chunk in one go:

CD%windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

net start sppsvc

slui.exe

Then press 'enter' and wait until you see a message telling you that the action completed.

Best wishes

Hah! I'm an idiot.... I tried to paste with CTRL V - just realized the right click works in the command window. So now I can make this work - Thank you! Thats the good news.

Now the not so good news.

A little message pops up that says "this isn't genuine go online". So I go online.

A window spins up in my browser (chrome) saying Validating Windows - this may take a while don't navigate away from this page. It runs like that for 15 minutes. So then I fire up Internet Explorer and copy and paste (see I'm learning) the address in from the chrome window. Same message.

I didn't wait quite as long, but after a few minutes I thought - well F this for a game of soldiers.

Any ideas of how to better do this? Again its the Build 7601 message. And its the original machine I had this issue with. Maybe I should just bomb it to dust and just reformat and reinstall everything from the start - but trying to avoid that if I can.

Thanks again.

The problem almost certainly lies in the permissions for the AppData folder in the NetworkServices profile.

Let's check
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands

ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData
ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\Networkservice
ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles
ICACLS C:\Windows
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32

post the results

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Well never mind - Windows just updated yet again. And now apparently I'm legal once more. I seem to slip in and out of favor faster than a Kardashian. I'm done with this though - this July 4th I'm going to just reinstall my Windows from the original disks and hopefully that will solve whatever gremlins are at the root of this thing. Thanks again for all the support as always. You guys are the best.

Please post a new MGADiag report after you've reinstalled - just in case!

Good luck with it.
