Clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate here and so far I love this new OS. However, I noticed that I cannot add any items under the favorites "star" icon that can be found on the left pane in windows explorer.

I tried drag & drop and "add current location to Favorites" but nothing works. I'm not getting any error either which is weird.

Any help? I'm new to win 7.

Thanks

Very weird.

Only thing I can come up with is that something you installed must block this.

Any explorer addons or tweaks installed?
Any file hacking?

If you didn't I'm clueless, and that doesn't happen to often.

Nah I didn't do anything to the windows explorer. The only tweaking I did is with the mouse cursor by installing CursorFX but this probably has nothing to do with my problem.

I've been searching low and hign in google and I only managed to find another person with the same problem apparently:

Simple way to fix this, create a folder in your document (C:\Users\*YourUsername*) called Links, then restart your computer. your problem is mostly caused by accidentally deleting the Links folder hence the system doesn't know where to save the favorites.

Hope this helps.

Just wanted to confirm that this fixed the problem for me. Once the folder was in place, I was able to see links in Favorites list in the left pane. I didn't have to reboot, either. Thanks for the help!

Same exact thing just just happened to me. Trying to clean things up and deleted a several folders I thought I didn't need. I was racking my brain as I like to do before just doing a search that generally gives me an instant fix.

This worked like a charm for me as well. Strangely enough there was already a Links folder but I still created another one and let it merge the two and then it worked even without a restart. Thanks!

Creating a second Links and merging did not work for me. I have a separate folder for Favorites that was moved over from XP. It's showing the correct location under Properties. The shortcut to Favorites under Links did not show the correct location so I fixed that. I still couldn't add a website to Favorites. Okay, new oddity...I was able to add this Windows 7 Forums to my Favorites. I tried adding two other websites and they took. It just wouldn't all me to add them to a subfolder. I have to manually "move" the site to my subfolders. Windows says I need admin rights to do this. I click on continue and it works. Guess I'm good to go now.

I am new to this world on Forum but I could help you in regard to yours question, I am using Windows 7 there is a direct comand by removing the Default and have the old bar, you simply press the [ Alt key ] to put it on and again to removed the Command Bar.

I hope this will help you. good luck.

PS: There is another command, but I don't wont to get in hot water since I am new at this great site.

Thank you mtek81, It worked for me, out of cleaning up my folders I deleted the links folder and other folders related to Favourites. What is did is went back to recycle bin and restored links folder. now everything works perfect. Thank you.

Not me

Sadly, it appears I'm the odd duck where this fix didn't work.

I added a folder called "Links" to the hidden "C:\User\{my username}" folder and nothing changed. So I did to all the other folders inside "User" where "Links" was missing and still no change.

My only work-around at this point is to rely on "Add to Library" instead. Inelligant, but it works.

Hey, that worked!

There are no entries in my "User Shell Folders" Registry group that start/end with "{...}"

Adding the one for "Links" fixed it. Thanks! (Wish I knew why the entry was missing.)

Great news. :)

It could have been anything from using a registry cleaning program that removed it, something went wrong when (if) you tried to move the Links folder to another location, etc....

Hello Mugsy,

Hey Shawn, thanks for the reply. I had forgotten about the question.

Recently, I had to reinstall Windows following a hard drive crash, so I have no idea if the fix would have worked or not. :P

Thanks anyway.
