Hi,

I'm trying to fix friends PC, first of all, they were able to start up the PC, then maybe after about a minute or so many clicks of the mouse, no program would open & it needed the on/off button pressed to switch it off.
I took the PC home and managed to backup their files.
I uninstalled a few programs like spotify etc to see if that would help, but it didn't, i'm thinking it was more software/driver???

anyway, i decided to reinstall Win7 HP. 64bit.

wiped the hard drive, reinstalled windows and i'm trying to update windows, where it just hangs on installing.
I left it overnight and it was still on the same update.

could this be a hardware issue??

anybody come across this before?

cheers

just seen a post about posting update instructions, i'll try it when it updates or hangs for hours

"hangs"? no response at all on screen? Not even some animation that it's still busy? No disk light flashing?

This problem is with installing updates only?

So not "hanging" at all. At least not what i call hanging. It's busy... maybe in a loop.
Assume 40 updates should be installed. Install only 1 at a time ... just as a test. Works?
Is the problem related to a specific patch?

just a wee update, i took the advice on updating 1 at a time, they started updated ok, slow to download.

then i started doing 5 updates at a time, all going well.

I've installed nearly all the updates, but....

i installed MSE and then WU started giving me problems.

when MSE was in RT protection, i'd get an error from WU C80002 or something like that, i'd then disable RT protrction in MSE and WU would find the updates that i still needed to install.

I tried a few times with MSE's RT protection on & off, same happened all the time.

uninstalled MSE and installed Avira free and WU is working ok

I'll get the info you need

There's not enough data in the CBS log to be able to diagnose the problem there - but if you're getting Memory problems, then those must be dealt with first, as they could corrupt anything else we do.

Do you have the knowledge to deal with this yourself, or do you need instructions?

I had a feeling it was hardware, as in my OP, just been a few frustrating days

I'm fine for repairs, built a few PC's before and installed windows loads of times, i'll be fine

just frustration that this install has been the worst lol

ordered 1 stick, as it's not my PC to just go out and get decent RAM (and the folk can't afford much), i'll swap 1 out, try the memory test, see what it says, if it's not good, i'll swap the other out.

ordered a HDD off of an amazon voucher we had, so if the HDD playing up i'll maybe swap it out as well

thanks for all the help from all who replied, i'll not solve this thread just yet until this stick arrives.

:)

I'm just running the PC with 1 stick of RAM (4GB), i'll add the other in when I get it delivered, but this way I can hand the PC back.

How many updates to install? Install only a few at a time. Or even only 1 every time. Which patches are really not-installable?

It looks you are not the original poster of this thread. Neither any of the responders. Why are you posting here and not in your own new post??

Be patient and don't overreact. Of course 10 hours is far too long.

Why have two patches brackets (the first 2)?
What error messages?

Is pc running slow when doing all kind of things, or only when installing?
