Setting up Outlook 2010 with pop3/imap SMTP

I tried to set up Microsoft Outlook to read my Yahoo POP 3 and IMAP and this is what i typed in for the required slots:
As account type I put in POP 3 (the 1st time and then did the below again this time with IMAP) then.
incoming mail server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
outgoing mail server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
The above found on the yahoo page regarding this subject.
Followed by my correct username (the full email address and correct password but in testing the account settings in outlook
The message was: "Log onto incoming mail server (POP 3) failed" and the same thing for the testing of email sent/received.
I followed instructions made here:

What was done wrong?

That is exactly where I had gone to do what was done. You make a good point when you say, "don't forgot to set the correct ports" the problem is, one is never given that choice.Look at the imagge attached and you will see (even if a 2nd window is used)

You have to click the advanced tab to set the ports

I think you also have to click the server tab to set authentication. Not sure with Yahoo but most providers require authentication.

One other thought... did you try to let Outlook automatically set up the account with just your username and password? I would think it would work with Yahoo but again, I've never tried it.

I was using the wrong SMTP. Now though the outgoing test does well the email test fails.
Yahoo says:
Outgoing (SMTP)
smtp.mail.yahoo.com
SSL and TLS
Port 465
I can't use both SSL & TTL. My choices are SSL, TLS, none or auto. SSL/TLS seem to prefer port 25 but 465 doesn't work either.
Now what?

Try port 587 with SMTP and use TLS.

Nope, as before the first test went well, the 2nd test 'email' failed I tried that port you gave with all 4 settings

@ pintree3. I think the problem is with Incoming Mail. On the section where you have POP 3 & Incoming Mail Server & Outgoing Mail Server try setting the Incoming Mail Server to pop3.yahoo.com & see if that works.

The problem with that is that using pop3 instead of IMAP is not complete--limiting what can be done or how outlook can be used. Anyhow, I found something else that is of interest. According to the following link, the reason why it may not be working is that Yahoo only allows it if you're in Asia.

I'm perplexed now. I use imap for my yahoo7 mail and I'm in Australia.
I followed the information on these two sites below and it's been working fine...

So, if you do find a solution, I'd be interested in knowing how you got it to work, because the settings I gave you work for me.

It seems you have settings for POP and IMAP mixed together. Which do you want to use?

Your screenshot shows one obvious error: Your account type is set to POP3, yet you are trying to use the IMAP mail server.

If setting up Yahoo mail using POP3, you need to change the incoming server to POP server (pop.mail.yahoo.com instead of imap.mail.yahoo.com).

Ok, so which number made it work?

Oops sorry :-(
I had used: Incoming server (IMAP): Either 993 (ssl)" before
The new number is: Outgoing server (SMTP): 465 (ssl)
I had used 25 (also given here) and another number given at some Yahoo page. Also I clicked on, "check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."
Which I had not always done before.
