Check whether the 'Disk Defragmenter' service is set to 'manual'. If not, set it to manual.

Maybe some .dll is out of wack. Run a sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt. Maybe it can fix it.

Well... I tried that and it found no errors.
Anything else?

In the reliability history/reliability monitor there should be a red X for this event. What does that say - and if there is a 'view technical details', have a look at those too.

Microsoft Management Console stopped responding and closed.

That all that happened today.

What do you think we should do?

Well... that didn't work.

But I did find a fix!

Step 1: right click your partition.
Step 2: Mark as active
Step 3: hit yes.

And done :D

Thanks,

Hmm, that is a bit strange. But if it worked it is OK.

I have apparently stumbled onto this problem as well, but marking the drive as ACTIVE did not help. I am having trouble shrinking the partition. What else to do?

I stand corrected it did work, but the system partition only shrunk by 15 Gb when there is over 160 Gb free space available. What is the issue now? Should I run the DEFRAG to see if files are UNMOVEABLE?

Windows Disk Management has certain limitations on what it will let you do.

You can try a more advanced program, such as Partition Wizard; a free download.

YEP, I have PARTITION WIZARD. It failed to shrink the volume as well. I am currently DEFRAGGING & will attempt to shrink further afterwards.

I will report back.

I performed a DEFRAG & it rreports back 0% fragmentation. I then attempted another SHRINK volume & I cannot SHRINK any further. PARTITION WIZARD reports 155Gb is still free.

Any suggestions?

If PW cannot shrink the partition, it must be an unusually situation. Is that the OS partition or a data partition ?

I was able to shrink the partition by 1st booting from a rescue disk & then run PARTITION WIZARD from a USB flash drive.

Why is this the case? I could swear that I have reduced system partitions in the past without going through this extra hurdle. Also, I noticed PARTITION left 1Mb unallocated space at the beginning & end of the disk. I cannot get rid of those. Why is that?

Glad to hear that it is working for you, that is quite strange about the 1MB of unallocated.
I don't think you should worry about it (since it is so small of space) :)

Thanks,
